Building an optical sensor interface, is not very difficult...
I built one, using few tools. Engraving cutter (to engrave copper), mini drill, soldering station and other small electronics tools.
I modified a qarl 3624+ superjack actuator, with reed sensor and wheel with 4 magnets, to an optical sensor with a wheel with 8 slots. I doubled the pulses and got more stability.
The main problem I faced, was the lack of space to use a fork optical sensor, so I decided to use a common 3mm 940 IR diode and a SMD phototransistor (PT15-21C/TR8). I first tested the electrical circuit on a Breadboard and used a wheel with 10 slots, spun on a mini drill at about 19,000 rpm (maximum speed of my mini drill), with the help of the oscilloscope, I improved the values of the components until I got all the pulses correctly and limited consumption to a minimum. Using the GBox V3000 positioner (I had to make a modification to make it deliver the 5 Volts to power the sensor), the maximum consumption was less than 7mA.
