Hi,

I have a few Jaeger 1224 motors in need of a clean up so I thought I would try electolytic rust removal from the metal plates rather than the usual method of rust removal with wire brushes etc.

There are a few pics attached below showing the setup. Basically, I have used an old T bracket as an anode, the Jaeger 1224 metal plates as the cathode and a PSU to provide current to the electolytic tank. A normal car battery charger can be used as a power source instead of a PSU. The electolyte is simply a half cup of ionic compound in 5 gallons of water.

Its fizzing away nicely at the moment, I will leave it a few days to fester then fish the metalwork out of the tank and hope for the best.

Interesting method - have a few plates myself that could do with a nice clean.

I use this stuff, great stuff for boats and other things, if you can find it locally, it works wonders on rust, it converts it to Iron Phosphate, but you have to descale or scrape the crusty rust first.

Link to manufactures web site.
Code:
http://www.ospho.com/

You remove the chunky stuff, then just spray this stuff on, and wait a few, the rust (Iron oxide) will convert to a very hard black coating (Iron Phosphate) that will never rust again, (at that location) you can paint over it or leave it.

I used it on the house boat, it saved a ton of work scraping and needling the pontoons, then a coat of metal primer and a coat of tar and in the water it went. .

And if you can boost your DC voltage it will go a bit faster, 4 car battery's in series will get the job done in 1/2 the time, you can also plate it a lot thicker.

Hi,

Small update on the electrolysis of the Jaeger 1224 plates.

I did the top plate on its own for 24 hours then fished it out of the tank and gave it a quick rinse and dry. The "before" and "after" pictures are attached. It looks like a reasonable amount of rust has been removed, however I think it needs to fester a little longer in the tank. I have place the top plate in the tank now and will give it 48 hours electrolysis to see how the longer time works on the rust.

Hi,

Another update on the electrolysis of the Jaeger 1224 plates.

I did the bottom plate on its own for 24 hours then fished it out of the tank and gave it a quick rinse and dry. The "before" and "after" pictures are attached. It looks like the rust has been removed and the electrolysis process seems to have completed. There was no more fizzing in the electrolysis tank and there appears to be no rust left on the bottom plate.

blademedia,

Have you any pictures of the new strong base that you make for the 1224?

I have some steel plates that are placed in the inside of the 1224 case but they do not give extra strength to the sides of the 1224 case. The sides of the 1224 case are still a weak point if a heavy load is placed on the motor if I use the steel plate.

Thx
