Not the way I saw it 2 Ferraris 1 BMWs 2 McLarens all on the racing line as they had just completed their flying laps, they are penalising one team for the FIA's stupidity in not imposing a rule that all cars must have left the track within 2 minutes of completing their flying lap instead teams are crawling round to save fuel for the race and are thus mobile chicanes for any driver still doing a flying lap. It needs addressing and fast. The problem is the FIA are too proud to admit they got something wrong

Totally agree about the FIA stupidity, I think they should set down a requirement in Q3 that all laps must be within 105-8% of the driver's fast time. If nothing else, it is very dangerous.

Here's the incident again (don't expect this to work in a couple of hours, the FOM are hot on Youtube apparently):

[tube]z3_GjtJ9SIY[/tube]

There are the two McLarens, Kubica and Webber further behind. Webber and Kubica are clearly off the racing line, while the McLarens remain on it. The onboard cam clearly shows that Heidfeld has to move off the line and that it results in a poor entry to the corner and a poor exit (mounting the curb, in fact).

I think it would have been fair if Kubica and Webber were also docked 1 grid slot, but I'm pretty sure they would have had a case for appeal, and that could have dragged on all day and night.

I just don't like Lewis as the media coverage made me sick of him after 10 mins but it does seem that it's aimed at the silver arrows however this is a big issue and could result in a bad crash so it needs to be altred before it happens rather than later....

Having said that if Lewis can't be ars£d to join the GPDA then clearly he's not fussed about his safety in which case he deserves the penalty...
(will someone please help me down off my soapbox now) lol

Official Race Classification | Full Story

Ferrari hit back in Kuala Lumpur today, with a Kimi Raikkonen victory, but were it not for some unfortunate tyre changing, McLaren’s day may not have been bad either.

The Reds, with Massa on pole and Kimi beside his colleague, started from the front and never looked back. The Brazilian held 1st place right up until the first round of pit stops.

Raikkonen pitted a lap after Massa, and his in-lap was an astonishing effort – setting best times in sectors 1 and 2 before turning in for changes. As Raikkonen was being serviced, Massa made his way down the long starting straight, but the Finn was released just in time, and beat Massa to the first corner.

Kimi did not relinquish the overall race lead from this point onwards, but Massa did not remain in 2nd. Only 2 laps after losing the race lead to Kimi, Massa span off turn 8 and beached in the gravel. Race over for baby-face.

Hamilton’s race was more eventful right from the start, as he had to make up for the grid penalty handed down to him (and Kovalainen) after qualifying.

Hamilton had a good start, taking advantage of contact between others to slot into 5th. However, he was to experience a long period behind Mark Webber, who was able to slow down the Brit considerably in a good looking Red Bull.

Disaster hit Lewis during his first pit stop. The front right tyre just wouldn’t come off, and Hamilton took 19.9 seconds to leave the garage. To his credit, Lewis fought well to get into 5th by the end, and had he a little more time, he would perhaps have taken 4th from Jarno Trulli.

McLaren team mate Kovalainen, and BMW pilot Robert Kubica, had textbook races – no problems, good lap times, no dramas and duly deserved podium spots, with the Pole finishing in a best ever 2nd. It would be poignant to remember that Kubica was 5th before retirement in Australia, and had he held on to that place, he would now be 2nd in the Championship.

Taking the final points places were Nick Heidfeld (6th), Webber (7th), and Fernando Alonso (8th). Heidfeld and Alonso found themselves in a duel with Coulthard earlier in the race, and when all is said and done, might well feel they had a good day at the office. The Scot, however, won’t with a 9th place.

Drivers’ Championship

Hamilton now leads the title race by 3 points from Raikkonen and Heidfeld. Massa is yet to score a point.

Constructors’ Championship

Massa’s second retirement didn’t do Ferrari any favours, but BMW might now feel even more jammy-dodger’d about Kubica’s Aussie outage – the Germans would be 1 point off McLaren had he not dropped out! As it is, they trail McLaren by 5.

ScotBordersF1’s stay at the top lasted 1 race, as they fell to 8th after a thoroughly disappointing 46pts.

New in top spot is wod’s Team. Very impressive for a new manager, proving that a lack of experience is of no importance at all!

Top scoring this weekend are Honda-Williams with 85. They move up 6 places, as do Slowhand Racing.

Norm in the Pure FF1 Cup > F1 SupaAberdeen are 104th and getting into the top 32 looks like a pipe dreams at the moment, but don’t give up Norm!

2007 - Currently in 4th, kleefarr was languishing in 12th after the trip to Bahrian. F1 Aberdeen were slowly building their insurmountable lead, and Linhas (just joined this weekend for this season, hi mate!) fell down 1 to 3rd.

2006 - With the points zero'd out after the two race 'warm-up' competition, which Speedy Devils won, Australia played host to race 3. T_G were top after the race, Speedy Devils were down to 3rd, and pipjacks were 2nd.

Official Qualifying Classification

A slightly revamped qualifying format blew into the desert qualifying of the Bahrain GP, but it was the man from the Eastern Bloc, Robert Kubica, who really blew the sand in others' faces.

With the duration of each session now in reverse (Q1 is now 20 minutes, Q2 is 15 and Q3 only 10mins), the afternoon started slowly, but by the end of the first round of qualifying, there was a blitz of drivers crossing the line. The big casulty was Red Bull's David Coulthard, who was beaten to 16th by Sebastien Bourdais in the sister Toro Rosso car.

Q2 saw similiar in its conclusion, and Red Bull again were to be cruelly cut away. Mark Webber (11th) was outside of the top 10 by only 9 thousandths of a second, with Jenson Button as the wing clipper this time. Barrichello (12th) and Piquet (14th) also dropped out.

On to the all important final session, and after the first run-outs, Massa was quickest with Hamilton, Kovalainen and Raikkonen in the top 5 (3rd to 5th), but the surprise name with 4 minutes to go was BMW's Polish pilot Robert Kubica.

Raikkonen (4th) and Kovalainen (5th) could not threathen the top 3, and so the showdown was set. Hamilton was first to set his final time - 1st. Next up was Kubica, and to everyone's surprise, he trumped the Brit. Finally, the last man to set a time on Saturday was Massa. Approaching the line shortly after a slow Raikkonen, the Brazilian failed to beat Kubica, but did take 2nd on the grid. Hamilton starts tomorrow from 3rd. The questions around the grid will now focus on just how much fuel the three are carrying into the race.

Jenson Button and Honda are showing signs of progress under Ross Brawn, qualifying in 9th and sharing the fifth row of the grid with two-time champion Fernando Alonso.

Nick Heidfeld could not emulate his team mate's performance. The German is 6th on the grid alongside Jarno Trulli. Nico Rosberg is 8th.

Ferrari kick started their season on Sunday, as Felipe Massa took victory in Bahrain, and teammate Kimi Raikkonen was also a comfortable 2nd.

Life was a beach in the desert sand for the reds, with a perfect start off the grid for both Massa and Raikkonen. Massa got off the start far quicker than pole-sitter Kubica, and Kimi jumped up to 2nd thanks to Hamilton’s terrible launch (more on that in a moment).

Shortly afterwards in lap 3, Kimi overtook Kubica for 2nd, and the Ferrari 1-2 was on. All that was left to decide was who would win – Massa or Kimi?

Racing at Ferrari is back, and Kimi pushed Massa throughout the first period of the race. It transpired that it was Massa who was carrying more fuel, and Massa led Kimi after the first pit stops. The battle continued, as the two exchanged fastest laps, and so the second pit stops would dictate the result. Kimi came in first, and in the same lap Massa set a new fastest lap. That was enough for the Brazilian, who came in the very next lap and came out ahead of Raikkonen.

Kubica was never at any risk of losing his 3rd place, and during the early stages of the race was even able to keep Raikkonen insight.

But what of Hamilton? Lewis’ day was a disaster! A nightmare start off the grid left the Brit ending the first lap in 9th, behind Fernando Alonso. And then the talking point of the race occurred in lap 2. Coming out of turn 3, Hamilton ran into the rear right tyre of Alonso, losing his front wing in the process. Conspiracy spiralled – Had Alonso ‘checked’ his enemy? The facts, as McLaren confirmed later, were that Hamilton’s front wing failed through the turn, resulting in the bizarre heightened acceleration exiting the turn. Hamilton would end the race bereft of points, in 13th.

Hamilton’s teammate, Heikki Kovalainen, had a far less eventful race, but coming in 5th will disappoint no one. Nick Heidfeld’s grand prix was also a quiet affair, but a 4th place finish makes BMW’s weekend another massive step forward – can the German outfit now challenge for a win?

The last three points paying positions went to Trulli, Webber, and Rosberg.

And finally, the Button-Coulthard incident! Chasing DC, Button dived into non-existent space into a tight turn, but before Jenson could pull away, he lost the back-end of the car and took a piggyback on Coulthard’s right side. DC, one would imagine, was not amused.

Drivers’ Championship

Raikkonen takes the lead in the Championship, with Heidfeld remaining in 2nd. Hamilton drops to 3rd, level on points with Kubica in 4th.

Constructors’ Championship

BMW sit at the top, with Ferrari a single point away and McLaren one more so.

Team Oily becomes the third team in as many races to lead SupaLiga, up 1 place. The Outcasts make an equal jump to 2nd.

The champions F1 Aberdeen hit back, scoring 100pts to rocket to 3rd, one place above the fallen leaders, Team Wod.

My Dynamo team are now in 5th, booking 90pts in Bahrain. Late entrants Linhas BMW impressed with a start of 86pts

Norm in the Pure FF1 Cup > SupaAberdeen have improved this weekend, they now sit at 71st.
