Just Acquired A 1.2M Channel Master

I'll get shot down in flames for this but my actuator 40m away at the top of the garden is fed using CAT5e cable doubled up into their pairs.

its only the motor cable i am stuck on atm, will alarm cable do it please?, also there is more than two wires to the motor what do i need to buy please,

For actuator you need: 2 to drive motor, they usually thick.
I've got a QARL 3624+ on my dish which is a pretty heavy duty motor and that draws just under 1 amp, so his motor is probably going to draw less. I think 1mm2 copper cable should be good for the motor. And for the sensor much thinner as it is not carrying any current.

I did not measure Amps in motor wire, perhaps 1 sq.mm could also be enough. Also depends on how far antenna from receiver. Anyway, having additional reserve and less losses is not so bad idea. At winter time Amperes could also grow because of, you know, low temperatures. Signal wire, agree, could be any, but when it is very thin than can be easily accidentally ripped. And lastly, price of thicker coper wire is not so great.

thanks lads ive got the motor working now :-), the lnb is shot what are my options please mid to high range ?.

Put any, if not satisfied than get better (more expensive) one :-shifty Just imagine, if I make perfect system at once, than you will not have any ways to improve it.... not interesting :-DOH2

ok ive fitted an old lnb, motors working fine, i just need to clean and grease/oil, and i am ready for setting up, a few things i am unsure about atm but i am sure i have read them in captain jacks thread, i did have a read through it the other day,

Yeah that's the one, there's a quad, 4 output version available too if you need more.

I think aceb got that pretty spot on with the cable type if its only a short run then CT/TX100 will be OK and as for the Motor wire if you have a CEF nearby you can get 4 core 1.25mm for around £1 a meter thats what i have on mine, i think alarm cable is a little on the thin side and the external jacket will suffer on the outside of the house, cheaper is probably external Cat5 and double up the pairs.

The mount looks in very good condition and with a little TLC as everyone else has stated with some cleaning and grease after should last years. Dont rush it get it right first time saves on any mishaps later on

thankyou digi247, what puzzled me the cable that is on the dish atm is one cable split into two and the chap who i got the dish from said you had to send away for this type of cable, i did not realise you could just use other types, please take a look at the first picture,

it must be special cable for the job, i might try and find this type as it does look the dogs dangles to me ?,

ive just been out and gave the front of the dish a clean its come up very well one little black mark that proving to be stubborn but i will work on it, its very cold out there this morning, just going to have a cuppa and i will go and do the rear of her :-).

Are both halves of the cable coaxial or is one coax and the other side twin? Used to see that stuff a lot on the old magnetic polarisers.

Well that all seems to have cleaned very nicely! It must be the scale of the photo but that coax looks armoured? Coax+4 core is just what you need but buying it seperately is bound to work out cheaper just won't look quite so tidy .

Hi Martin,

That Cable looks like the Old Nynex/NTL/Virgin cable from many moons ago, I did a similar job to replace the exact same cable on a customers last year as he wanted to do routine maintenance on his dish so at the same time i renewed with TX100 and the Separate 4 Core that i posted about from CEF.

Regards

ok i am stuck now where to set the dish, ive looked through C/J thread and just cant get my head round it :-(,

my lat is 53.34 and my long is -1.38 what should i set the fixings to please.

Set the dish up on 1W, as this is your closest due south satellite, your longitude being 1.38W.
You need the jack set to about half way then manually tune in all the satellites required, using the Diseqc 1.2 options on your receiver, which should be connected to the V-Box.

Forgot to mention you need to set the East/West limits, you can do this using your receiver but also check what the hardware limits are set to on the motor, if stuck there should be a youtube video showing how to do this.

thankyou mick,i have done that thanks, its the settings on the dish ajustment i am stuck on, i havent got 1.38 on the dish 2.5 is the lowest ?
