...and there's a whacking great dish on the back of the house!

Im presuming it was Austar and the connector plates with the logo stamped on might give it away.

So what can I get, will I need cardsharing, is DM still favoured as I used to use one in uk or is there something better/ cheaper (I.e vu+).

The only other thing I'd consider is a PC box but know very little.
 
Whilst we do have a few antipodean members, not sure whether they visit regularly, may be better to look at one of the Australian satellite forums like sats-general.com
