After payment for a repair I was also gifted this ...
SilverStone TJ05S-X Silver Aluminum Front Full Tower Case with Side Window w/o PSU - Scan.co.uk
It was originally quite a high end Tower case ...with quite a high spec ...but sadly now discontinued..
I would very much like to tansfer the internals of my server into this lump ..as it has a lot of space and allows for many hard drives and fans etc..
Problem tho'..
The plastic hard drive slides (tool less) are not present so this would obviously make drive mounting tricky ...unless I could replace them ..
A longshot I know but worth an ask ...
Anyone seen one of these before ? ...
Luckilly I have one set of slides ..so maybe I could make a mold in latex and pour new ones in liquid plastic ...but these would not be anything like as good or as flexible as the original ones ..
Anyone ?
The case takes :-
  • 2 x 3.5" External
  • 8 x 3.5" Internal
  • 4 x 5.25" External
So would be perfik ..for a large server environment..

I assume there is supposed to be a picture of the slide drawer?

Is it like the Dell one?
 
They look like the standard HP/Compaq/Dell runners, we had loads at the phone shop I used to work in, I might be wrong though as I can't judge the width from the funny angle on the pics but yours look a little thinner

I suspect these are a bit thinner than normal ...

Hmmm ..
This is shape is not easy to mold ...on account of the holes in the frame ..
The support 'pips' that fit into the hard drive holes trap air at exactly the wrong spot also ..
So how did they turn out ..?
Close ..but I suspect not close enough ..
I will tidy them up once they fully cure ..but this is an act of desperation I suspect ..

If it were mine I'd drill through the housing and bolt the drives from the outside (that ws the reason for removable caddies in the first place).

Then again I have a Lian-Li tower that needs finishing (building her up for about three years - pictures to follow)
 
Chances are ..thats what I'll end up doing CH ...
But ..I figured I'd try molding the slides first ...though this is proving tricky..

I have various springy/clippy things here, as well as the usual Bright Green suspects from Dell

Interesting lump that CH ..
Must Admit I've never used a water cooling system ...
Should make a nice Server/Tower indeed if you ever finish it ..
Id be curious to know if the Dell slides were compatible ...so if they are surplus to requirements ..
Id like to try a pair ..
If they do work ..I can try and obtain more on ebay ...but no point in persuing that unless I know they fit.

I aint nuffin if not persistent...
below is probably the closest I have got yet ...
A new single mold having been made ...and cuts made in tha silicon in a new location for release of the +ve ..
Lousey day for the resin tho' ..
damp and cold does not suit the mix ..or cure time ..
Still ..
This mold is the last I shall make ...and if it fails to produce useable sliders ..then I'm relying on CH after his trip for Dell slider dimensions ...
And will drill the cage to fit the hard drives as a last resort..

So ..I've sort of completed a pair ..
These have had a full 24 hours+ to cure ..and are hard enough to be trimmed and filed ..
Not actually tried to fit a drive into the cage yet ..
Maybe tomorrow ..but this is the result after some filing and cleaning of the flash..from the molding..

My worry is the plastic might be a bit too flexible ..
Might try a harder resin next time..

As usual imaptience won out ..
..and yes ..that plastic would be better if a harder resin used ..
But for now ..I will let the slides cure another 24 hours ..in situe before I try and remove the hard drive ..

Searched ebay for hours ...and didn't see any that looked exactly like mine ..
It not being a Dell etc ..
They may fit ..
..they may not ..and thats the reason I am waiting for CH to post dimension on his return ..

I would have thought you could just use strips of thick cardboard either side of the drive - the rails are only packing material really

Yes and no AS ..
Cardboard packing would sort of work providing the packings were anchored in some way to the sides of the drive ..or they would simply fall down on top of each other ..
IE ..you could stack 6 hard drives in a pile on top of each other ..touching ...and not one of the drives would make contact with the sides of the cage ..
in other words the plastic runners fit inside the glooves created by the punched holes in the cage frame .....thus making up the packing distance ...but also have plastc 'pips' which protrude sideways into the hard drive body ..replacing screws ..and making it physically possible to hang each hard drive above the one below creating an airflow gap between..
Thus the drives hang in mid air above each other..

In which case I would fit put the whole carriage system on its side, or failing space in the machine to install every other drive inverted, as with the more intelligent storage systems, to remove the gyroscopic effect when they are all running at 'ramming speed'.
