I have a compulsion I admit ..
Sometimes I just wont say no ..
perhaps I should.
Yesterday evening a gardener friend of mine rolled up in his van ..
I got something in the back thats right up your alley..
So ..a fiver changed hands ..simply because he needed to cover petrol ..
I'm sure I got my fivers worth ...but did notice straight away a large crack in the dish surface ...exposing an laminated mesh..
The pole was good as was the dish tripod ..and was curious about the mount/motor.
..which sadly has no cover ..
Smashed off at the screw fixings ..
cest la vie ..
waiting for the rain to stop so I can disassemble..but nipped out for a few photos when it eased a little.
So what have I got here ?
comments welcome ?

I think you've got your moneys worth.
It looks like my setup, at least in 10-20 years time:)
If the motors still working, on the Jaeger 1224, then you should be able to get case top, or manufacture one, if not it's good for spare parts, and if you don't want it I'm sure others, including me, would buy it off you.
The dish arms also look in good condition, but the LNB looks old.
Still worth the petrol money.

There is another thread, regarding motorway signs, that might provide a case top;)

Thanks Mickha
I'll get the thing apart as soon as I can ..
no doubt it wont be easy with so much rust ..but I'll salvage what I can ..and at least get to test the motor then.
Always wanted a 1224 ..though not in such a distressed state.

Nice find! But, wait a minute- why do you people need so much stuff?! Nuts? Just kidding. :-lol
Motor, feedarms, LNB, everithing counts and can be reused. Motor even could be renovated. Dish- unfortunately broken, even it can work I would not install it for myself.

I am sure that, with your great inovation, you can fix the crack in the dish after checking that it has not affected the focal point.
Fiber glass or Areldite can do wonders.

Was getting earache about the lump lying around from my dad ..

It is on his land/garden afterall ...so this morning I set about the dismantling..
Seperated into manageable pieces now ..
Also very pleased with the pole..
2 mtres long x 3inch diameter and solid rust resistant steel ..
a bit like scaffolding ..and at least 3mm thick..
certainly got my monies worth on that alone.
;)

Have you managed to check the motor yet?
One simple test is to use a 12v battery, jsut run a wire from the positive, and negative, to the two M connectors and the motor should move, gently, East, or West.
The channel master adapter plate also looks quite good, and solid, clean the rust off, and paint it, and you could sell that, if you don't need it.
Were the dish arms in as good condition as they looked, in the photos?

Not tested the motor as yet ..
probably over the weekend.
The dish arms are good insofar as they are not bent at all ..
the tripod came off the damaged dish fairly easily but the lnb clamp bolts are seriously rusted so will have to somehow dismantle and remove the plastic lnb mount before I can fully remove and dismantle the tripod legs.

Also ..I would very much like to renovate the jaeger assuming the motor _is_ ok ...
but of course am short of a motor cover ..
If anyone has one spare from a salvaged unit I would be interested in taking it off your hands.
?

The top of the LNB clamp is only held on by two screws, which should come out, unless the top is worn, giving no grip to the screwdriver. Once the top clamp is removed the LNB should slide out, giving you better access to the screws attaching the bracket to the arms.
Hopefully the motor is still working and you an find a top cover. These seemed to be the first part to break, on the motor, mainly the plastic screw supports, if you weren't careful in removing/tightening the screws.

As mentioned at the beginning ..
I dont even have the broken cover ..
I suspect this was smashed off to get access to the wires ..by the kak handed individual who took it down ..

Is there any chance the broken cover could still be where the dish came from? You may be able to have some kind of repair done, providing it's not in a thousand pieces.

That's gonna be a right pain in the *** to make one! can it even be done?

Already asked my friend to check around at the location it came from ..
Sad to say nothing found ..
he suspects it was binned when the dish came down..
doh!

Check for any broken/damaged Jaeger 1224's, you can sometimes find some on the big dishes thread, but first you need to check if your motor is working.
That expensive, awful, shop, satellite superstore, did claim to have some spare parts, for the Jaeger 1224, when I was looking to buy one, so you could check there, but at their prices you could possibly pick up a second hand motor.

Excellent find! Definitely worth a fiver.

The crack may very well be without any real effect on the performance, provided the to sides of the crack "come together".
As BM300 says, the visual and structural state can be fixed with suitable repair material, you can get a lot of mileage with body (car!) repair kits from e.g. Halfords etc.
The arms should be straight - if they are you are in luck.
The LNB holder itself does not rust, only the bolts (can be replaced easily) and the nuts embedded in the plastic does.
The bolts on some of my CM LNB holders are a clever retaining type, whereas the latest modern one I bought at normal bolts.
I also have one of the very old LNB holder, where the LNB clamp bolts actually penetrate into the feed-support-arms.
Worst case you can buy this stuff as spares, or you can venture into making your own.
The latter may be your best option - RimaNTSS is doing a sterling job elsewhere on this site.
At least you can "pull down the feed-support arms", in order to make room for multiple LNBs. (This seems absolutely necessary in your set-ups, VS...)

Ok ..
the motor does not move at all ..
..and I suspect this is due to prolonged exposure to the elements..
The motor cover may well have been removed a long time ago..
certainly the corrosion would indicate this.
So ..
Have revmoved the motor and is currently taking a bath in methylated spirits..
Then an oil bath ..etc..
Maybe I can free it off ..
Maybe not ..
but nothing to lose.

Hmmm ..
Not looking good inside the motor atm ..
The pre-soaking in meths has allowed me to at least partly open the motor ..
..
hopefully I can get it into it's component pieces ..
then just maybe I have a chance..

Well ..fwiw I'm in ..
Lots of rust in there ..
Armateur etc seperated an soaking in meths ..
Brush tails are covered in a rust slime ..but since these are copper braid may not be beyond salvage..

Let this be a lesson to others ...
Just how important weather proofing is ..
particularly if you live in almost perpetual rain like Manchester..
