Ka-Band Satellites

Sorry, I am a bit lost with your message exchange, 19°E, 42°E,etc...

Signals are @ 42°E, this is a circular polarization scan, not a linear.

Well, the spot is not on my QTH for sure, according to the signal level (even if the weather conditions are not very good right now)
all are empty TP

I can also confirm reception of these signals @42E in the West of England.

18591 symbol rate=5920 sig strength=10.5dB
18633 11040 8.3dB
18688 11040 8.3dB
18703 11040 7.2dB
18738 11040 6.8dB
18773 11040 7.2dB

These signals are all circularly polarised. My LNB is linear pol and the same is observed either H or V.
They all lock OK but no observed programme material. Turksat 4A has two Ka transponders. So, is this the satellite we are seeing?

All being well today i'm going to put one of my Hughes lnb's with poloriser in LHC mode on the lnb changer to get a better understanding .
 
Try this one - probably Hellas Sat 3 39E. Not much to see and nothing to demodulate using normal DVB tools at the signal levels I was getting. There's a strong carrier plus a few 300-800kHz wide data signals. Circular polarisation on a linear feed.
Plots 10Ms/s, 32k FFT

Ruled that one out the other day Graham, video shows analyser first looking at Hellas Sat 3 @ 39°East - then moving on 42°East and then back to 39°East.
Iv'e got the Hughes ready for LHC, just need to go up to the changer and put it on.
* The video's a bit unsteady - - only using one hand.

Thanks for that John - although my 39E carrier is the same level as yours, I don't get anything like your signal levels on the 42E carriers. In fact it 's barely worth putting them up here, as they are almost hidden beneath the noise. This is with my 1.2 Gibby.
Such a difference seems to suggest that this 42E Ka footprint(s) (or whatever satellite it is) favours some areas more than others?

This might make you feel better Llew, there is only one signal at the moment on 42° that is running at a constant decent level and that is 18.599. All the other 5 or so are being simultaneously ramped up or down at any given time. You might just have caught them at the wrong time ?.

Not sure from those footprints what is the strategy behind them?
Certainly well-defined, aimed at particular spots (Iceland too?)

~51dBW at my location apparently - more perhaps than yours or SimonE's it seems. Time for a dish alignment.

... A rather large bit of Ka signal blocking taking place here
And thanks to s-band Graham for the heads up of these rather nice Norsat 18GHz lnb's from a source in Israel and also to Rolfw for the N to F adapter. The lnb is labeled up as freq coverage from 18.372 to 19.300GHz but found to operate flat from 18.350 to 19550GHz using external signal source.

It looks externally identical to my Korean XMW pll one that went belly up after water ingress problems Llew but at a fifth of the price and better spec. We'll see how long this one lasts for
