Top Tip Keep Your Personal Information To Yourself

This morning I found in our garbage room an empty carton box from DHL.
It had the name and address of one of my neighbors who is also a satellite enthusiast.
The label shows that the box content was a VU+ SOLO 4K
I can't understand why most people want to give burglars a reason to give them a visit?
This receiver after paying local taxes is quite expensive. He should have taken off any personal information and thrown the carton box in the recycling bins.
I usually use a paper shredder, which is a bit laborious as I feed it with paper in small numbers not more than 3 or 4 pages although it can take a lot more.
If you don't have access to a paper shredder, this simple method will do the job:
Stick the paper in a small bucket, fill it with water and let it soak for few minutes. It will become mushy so just roll it up anyway you like and send it to a recycling bin. Or even better, put it in a paper recycling bin, as the water soaking I believe is the first stage they use in the recycling factories.

No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

If you have access to a garden and there are no laws against having a fire pit, chimnea or open bonfires, then you can destroy sensitive & personal info in there too, plus there's something cathartic about having a nice raging fire going outdoors... :D

Fortunately we don't have this possibility. Fire hazards you know.
The idea is to recycle the paper.

Paper is carbon, carbon is absorbed by trees, trees become paper, paper recycled... :)

(plus the ash is useful in the garden for nutrients, so another useful part)

Makes for nicer looking trees though, and besides, recycled paper is usually just bogroll anyway... :)

OpenBox X5 on a 1 meter motorized dish.
And now a 10 foot "C" band dish.

Custom built PC

I shred anything with a name address phone number or other info in a criss-cross shredder, then pulp it in a 5 gallon metal bucket with water and a electric paint mixer, then dry out the pulp flake it out then burn the pulp when dry, or if you don't want to burn it, it makes great mulch for a garden.

But I have a bunch of "Above Black" information that needs to be disposed of.

Whilst I agree about destroying paper address labels, invoices, account-related letters and so on as we do by shredding, IMHO I doubt that most potential fraudsters would want to "waste" their time trying to put together a jigsaw puzzle of small strips of paper from the "average person's" recycling bags in the hope of finding enough useful financially-related info to make it worthwhile.

Internet/telephone info capture/pfishing fraud seems to be a far more lucrative pastime - and you don't even have to go to the person's house to do it!

That's why I always use the paperless billing options. I very rarely get letter post now, just the Amazon avalanche of cheap dvds etc :D

We get very little surface mail and next to no spam. It's not hard to achieve, just so long as the keys are not left under the flowerpot!

There are still the address labels and delivery notes in the packages that need to be destroyed - and then there is the possibility of a keylogger (or something far more sophisticated!) having been downloaded to your computer to track what you buy, from where - and how you pay for it.

We had a spate of lost / missing mail a few years back

Turns out the TV licensing people (AKA Capita) had influence/control of the PAF - Postal Address Finder, and could adjust what was the personal detail of the householder or residents using a particular dwelling for their own purposes.

It could be continuing of course, it is impossible to find out where all mail sent out to an address ends up.

I take all steps needed, and go above to comply with the "fraud guarantee" with my bank, so if my card is cloned or similar it's not my problem. (Yes I have been a victim of fraud)

I only use my iPhone for mobile banking, PayPal, paym etc I never use a desktop pc for that kind of thing.

When I lived in Sherborne, a load of flats had post stolen, the problem was the postman not pushing the letters fully through the door, a few minutes after the postman an undesirable person would steal the letters from the letter box.

A few months after that happened a load of us had identity theft.

Chris
Re the iPhone, IS the IOS still as secure as it is reputed to be, as I have seen comments to the contrary?
