Film director Ken Russell has died aged 84 after suffering several strokes.


Best known perhaps for films such as the rock opera Tommy and the idiosyncratic Women In Love and The Devils, I remember enjoying watching the TV films on the composers Elgar and Delius in the 60's before he began his main film career.

A strange genius. Watching The Devils made me aware for the first time of the aftermath of being burned at the stake when someone picked up the charred remains of a bone the following day.

RIP Ken.
 
Two of his films in my collection are Altered States, and - with possibly the best opening credits of the time - Billion Dollar Brain.

A great loss to the industry, may his legacy continue.
