I realise this is a strange request however here goes, my sister-in-law's husband has one failed kidney and the second about to fail so much so that he has already had an operation to insert a permanent subcutaneous valve as dialysis will take place three times per week and having the valve permanently integrated into the venus system avoids scarring and irreparable damage to the vein or artery.

What I want to know is this, is there any sort of 'LEGAL' system in place in Europe for buying a healthy kidney and if so does anyone have contact details.

His medical insurers have agreed to pay the bill for it and it's purchase, transportation and installation, he just needs a source and pretty quickly by the sounds of it. He is 65 and not at all computer savvy so is currently getting nowhere and reaching the stage where he has not strength to investigate.

Any help would be great as I am also drawing blanks with this unusual enquiry

You need to check the Human Tissue Authority, assuming he is in the UK.

Sorry, that is where my knowledge ends on the subject

You could ring your local licensed outlet and see if they know of an international equivalent.

@Topper be careful as buying a kidney in some countries is illegal (U.K. It is)

My brother in law was on dialysis.

The subcutaneous valve is a very good option (brother in law had one fitted privately, and bought his self the machine at home)

My sister had to go on a special course, as she was the one putting him on the machine.

No it was not so much the buying as the getting into the legally operated system, anyhow the good news is that as his medical insurance covers it he has the option to have it done in his home country and they have already contacted me and I have already sent him the application form to register as a recipient with the appropriate government run institution.
Apparently there are specialist clinics in most countries that are under the control of the appropriate authorities.

Has your brother-in-law never considered a transplant Chris?

Yes he had 2 of them, it was done at Southampton Hospital. He used to have to carry a pager with him, when it would go off he had to phone the hospital to confirm it wasn't a false alarm, and then phone his local police station, the police would pick him up and take him on blue lights to south Hampton.

He had dialysis 3-4 times a week, the hardest thing we found was the special diet, no starch etc.

He lost his kidneys due to a car accident.

He has passed away since, but due to heart attack, on his way to work one morning.

My sister-in-law's husband has a rogue gene and he has one sister on dialysis 3 times a week, his son also has reduced liver function, that was discovered when he was only 21, we sometimes should thank our lucky stars for our health or perhaps him upstairs. I have just returned from my weekly 80 lengths non stop swimming which is my way of keeping healthy, but most faulty genes we can do nothing about yet.

Give a Kidney
