Last minute rescue plan for skyDSL
A last-minute solution to secure the survival of German satellite-based internet service skyDSL might have been found. A purchase option contract has been signed with Swiss holding company Mountain Super Angel AG, skyDSL's Berlin-based parent group Teles announced.
The agreement enables the company to take over 80% of the service, with the call option valid until January 28. Financial details were not revealed. According to Teles, there would be no changes for skyDSL customers and partners with tariffs and hardware offers remaining unaltered. skyDSL would also continue to be operated by the same team.
Mountain Super Angel already holds a share in MVOX AG, which operates wireless broadband services in rural regions of Germany based on WiMAX technology. The company called skyDSL "complementary to our activities".
skyDSL managing director Andreas Krüger said: "Broadband development in Germany still has a lot of gaps. Over a million households are dependent upon alternatives like skyDSL for fast internet access. I also see huge potential for skyDSL in other European markets such as France, Italy, Spain and in Eastern Europe, Russia more than anywhere."
Teles announced in September 2007 that it would cease its business in the field of internet via satellite by yearend due to economic considerations. "We don't intend to continue making losses forever," said Teles' CEO Sigram Schindler at the time. skyDSL offers fast Internet access to private and business customers who live outside of areas covered by standard broadband services offered via ADSL lines or cable networks.
