Hi friends
Spent the last couple of hours familiarising myself with my latest weapon in the fight against the unrepairable ...
A very nice little programmer EZP2010
Relatively inexpensive ...and fairly up-to-date with the latest serial flash eproms.
Got sick of telling customers that ..their LCDTV was a write off because of a corrupt over the air firmware upgrade that went wrong ...or a laptop which was powered down during or flashed with ...an unsuitable bios upgrade.
I've so far read 2 surface mount 8 pin flash eprom bios chips ..both HP removed from laptop mainboards
..and a firmware chip (again 8 pin surface mount) removed from a supernarket special 'NEON' LCD TV ..
Now I need to find suppliers of these chips preferably in this country ..in order to clone bios and firmwares..
Chances are ..I'll have to source and import from China Hongkong or Japan ...because as usual ..such technology is _not_ available in the UK ..
They simply dont make such things available ...as the UK doesn't fix ....only consume ..
One of the reasons we are in such an economic bind in the first place ..
Sad to say we manufacture little ...repair even less ...just consume ...consume...consume...with borrowed money.

How true VS, good luck with the programmer

More power to your cause VS. I HATE throwing something that I know can be repaired away.

I suspect it' s only the baby-booners with the WWII "make do and mend" ethos still ringing in our ears.

Good on ya VS

I remember as a kid there was TV repair shops on nearly every corner, now they`re either all gone or they now sell starvi*w boxes and cheap tat (but non repair anymore)

Glass half full VS. There are some small pockets of busy individuals left. They just don't make much of a noise (well until they start up the beast they've rebuilt in the garage of course)

In truth CH ..you are correct ..there are a few of us left fighting the cause and eeking out a living..
To give you an idea of just how its diminished though..
I am a member of a TV repair group and have been for a number of years now...
We share what limited service info is available ...and survive by doing so.
In 2000 we had around 5000+ members ..stretching as far as Australia and New Zealand ..
But mostly UK members..
5 years ago we received regular notifications of shop and business closures ...and highly inteligent qualified individuals looking for jobs in totally unconnected fields..
Some retired as they were lucky enough to be close to 'that age' ..and financially able to do so ..
Some went in search of less demanding menial work ...so dischuffed with the system ...they did a Ken Barlow ..and collected trolleys part time in the very supermarkets that forced them out of business..
One even got himself elected as a local councillor to escape the coming storm ..
He still helps out on occasions ..and is still a member
To bring this up to date..
Some of us hunkered down to brave the storm ...but sadly we are now so few in numbers we remaining members would barely fill half a dozen minibuses..
Such have been the changes..
