Hi everyone,
Wanting to test an actuator that I recovered some time ago.
I came across a potentiometer instead of a reed switch.
I knew the optical sensor but I had never seen a potentiometer.
And you ?

They were never common for the satellite industry but yes, I've installed them in the past.
They are still used in mast rotators for amateur radio use (Yaesu G series) for example.

If carefully set up they can be extremely accurate as there is no 'stepping' involved.
 
Many years ago I had a Yaesu rotor and it was not so accurate. But I used it only for HF and VHF amateur bands so no need for big accuracy.
A feedback potemtiometer is used in satellite rotating feeds like Viking, for example.
