Just upgraded from 17 to 17.1

No need for a major reinstall: Just launch Update Manager, click on Edit and there is an Upgrade Option.

Click through all the pre-amble and simply Update.

Does require a reboot.

Some useful info here and here

No idea! It just worked. No unpleasant bending. Nuffin.

I'd try again another time - I believe the Servers are busy.

Ah, actually, just do the normal package update routine first, just in case you haven't got the latest "mintupdate" (Which is a prerequisite).

Then retry the major upgrade.

Straws suitably clutched.

PS: A contraction of Mint Oracle gives Miracle.

Sadly, I reckon you could counter that ;)

I'm leaving my Linux PC the way it is for now, it works so i see little point in doing the upgrade just yet.

Yep. That's the advice on the Mint pages too, oddly enough.

I compromised and upgraded the Netbook but left the Laptop alone.

No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

And yet, the claims of dodgy updates were often aimed at windows... :-rofl2

I'm using Mint 17.1 Cinnamon on a laptop, and I have to say it's a little on the slow / heavy side compared to earlier versions.
I just installed pure Debian Wheezy XFCE on my main desktop, and it is really fast - booting and shutting down and also starting applications - very impressive, I have used it before on older hardware and was impressed then and with only 512 of ram and an old P4 processor.
Takes a little more work to set up but well worth the effort.

Not noticed any significant difference in performance. But some of the new Control Panel features are very useful.

Every software update implies certain risks to the end user as these are not fully tested to each users circumstances, have personally reserved myself from auto updates and have a full store of tested and functional working software in my download folder.
Thus have deleted latest firefox update and loaded a previous version.

Will wait to upgrade my linux mint cinnamon ( to rebecca ) for the time being until it has been thoroughly tried and tested.

Regards

My telephone co. is upgrading to another supplier next week, telenor to netcom, fingers crossed.

Went belly up today with the change over to the netcom provider, just a single bar on the signal strength meter and only if I stand in a certain kitchen corner ( not the dunces ), fortunately there was no commitment agreement so have ordered a new sim card from another mobile company that uses the telenor provider.

Must wait 9 days for the new sim but hope that normal service will be returned.
