I have quite a few cd's around here that have the title living stereo, this seems to be trademark to Sony.

But what is living stereo, and what is different to normal stereo?

Thanks, I have had a quick read, still a bit puzzled, as to why some are 2 channel and some I have is 3 channel.

But that has answered some of my questions.

The 3 channel ones will be in SACD (Super Audio CD) format and may be compatible with your normal CD player as many fo the discs were recorded with two layers -one in legacy CD format and one in SACD format. SACD was introduced as a successor to CDs with the capability of multi channel sound when played on an appropriate player and similar maximum content to a DVD of 4.7 GB. I have two high end DVD players ( a Pioneer and a Denon both also capable of multiple other formats including DVD-A (DVD Audio)) both capable of playing these discs. Sound quality is generally better on an SACD player than standard CDs. They didn't really take off as the developers Sony and Phillips hoped but SACDs are still produced by mainly the smaller labels for audiophiles.

The Living Stereo CDs were originally standard CDs with higher master recording quality but later used SACD dual format as well.
