ive just purchased this lnb cover from the famous auction website and I have to say its 100% helped with the signal level when it rains !!!

less than £20 delivered to Sheffield uk

Looks very nice (should do for £20) - but I believe that many people have knocked up something generally similar from old plastic bottles and metal brackets/strips (as used for hanging car exhausts and the like).

Reminds me to do something like that for the TD110 - think I probably have all the bits already.

Good to keep the rain off the LNB's eye, but what about the several tons of water in the clouds 10,000 feet above it??

Really really dark clouds can cause satellite signal rain/snow fade, no cover is going to help with that.

The only thing that realy works is a bigger dish, we in the CATV field use very large dishes to help with rain/snow fade.

Agree on both counts - "received wisdom" also says that it can help to protect the cover on the front of the LNB from UV degradation IF the shield is opaque rather than clear (seems that a "butchered" fruit juice plastic bottle might be a decent starting point - will have to "persuade" SWMBO to donate one! )
 
The problems with LNB eyes here is not due to UV degradation but to woodpeckers.

The little suckers like to try and put acorns anywhere they can, the funny thing was that there were no acorns in the LNB.

Now this LNB was from Invacom, they said it should have been bird proof, and they supplied a new LNB (for free) to back that up, the new LNB had a thicker cover.

The red color of the protective cover on this one was due to UV radiation, but it didn't affect the signal one bit.

Many years ago, I had several covers that actually split due to plastics degradation, but I haven't seen/much any evidence of that more recently. In early 2016 I took down some Lidl (=Comag!) LNBs that had been on a dish since around 2002, and they were OK and still working - OTOH, we don't get that much Sun, even in this part of the UK!

Timo demonstrated the old plastic bottle lash up was essential to get good results with the thin 23mm feed 'rocket' LNBs.

Yorkshire - that's "North of Watford" IIRC - so probably NOT!
 
thankyou for all the replies it is helping a little on the hard to get satellites ie 7w etc !!!
 
If the satellite is hard to get then a cover will not make it any better, a bigger dish is the best way, or better coax could also help.
