LNB problem?

Dear members,

Please help me, i've just found this fascinating site and hope you guys and your considerable knowledge will be able to help me.

Our tv and freesat box (a goodmans one) were working fine, but has just over the last month left us with virtually no channels, and at best, we get some which are so jittery, its impossible to watch them.

The dish is a little sky one with a quad LNB.

I went out today and bought a labgear satellite finder, but upon plugging it in, the needle goes up and down slowly, then stays down. After a minute or two it will go back up, and it continues doing this.

Am I right in thinking that the LNB is cooked and needs replacing?

Could be the LNB, could be dish alignment.

Does this mean you connected the signal meter at the receiver end? This means the problem could be the LNB, could be the cable, especially at the connection, could be the dish, or it might even be the receiver.
Can you check your receiver on another dish, friend, or family members, to rule out any problem with the receiver?
If your receiver is fine then you need to check the cable, and connections, for any obvious signs of damage, especially water ingress, and look at the dish, to see if it has moved.
 
Where is the dish mounted ?

If it is not too far from a safe perch you could try nudging it with a broomstick.
 
thanks guys, its about 3m above the roofline of the house, so about 10m up in the air, so very awkward to get to. with the sat finders needle just going up and down like a yoyo, i.e, upto 8, then to zero, and up and down...... it leads me to think it could be the LNB, but i'm no expert.
 
Well the most likely reason for such violent fluctuations in the meter reading is a poor connection ................. the short cable stub that comes with basic meters is not really fit for purpose and the inner core is so thin and flimsy that intermittent connection is highly likely.

Only affect Tps around 11630 Mhz and 12480 MHz ( Equivalent to Low and High Band downshifted IF of 1.88 Ghz - the latter being the operating frequency of DECT devices).

thanks tivu, I did know its certain MHz but I did not know what they are and where he/she is viewing ?

Your dish is 3M above the roofline. Was there a reason why the dish had to be placed so high? Are there any trees in the line of sight? If so these could have grown and now be causing problems again. Equally the dish is probably exposed to high winds and so could have moved, and of course the problem could still be with the LNB, cable, connections, or even the receiver.
The easiest things to check, without going near the dish, is the F connector, at the receiver's end, and the receiver on another dish.
Why not try the dishpointer ap and see if you can site your dish elsewhere, preferably below the roofline, and still receive 28.2E.
 
I've no idea why the dish is mounted so high, there are trees, but about 300m away, and they are about 30m high, so i guess shouldn't interfere much. We are forced to watch tv on the laptop at the moment. I might get up on the roof, and drop the dish down, check LNB connections, etc

If you have ANY doubts about your abilities to safely access the dish dont even try to get to it - get an expert in. Even if its only the tenner lnb its not worth trying to save a few quid and putting yourself in hospital!
