If you are using a card (official or otherwise), the codes are in the card and the cam is providing a standard CA (conditional access) function - in the case of S*ca, the matrix cam is effectively emulating an aston (or other S*ca) cam.

If you are not using a card, then the cam is doing two jobs; an emulation of the conditional access system and emulation of a card - in this case the codes are in the cam firmware.
