Lost in translation

Recently erected my own kit and now I'm getting to grips with the hardest part - discovering what my kit is capable of.

To this effect I've discovered a whole new tech language that details how to locate a satellite channel. Can anyone fill in the blanks for me and other newbies? Here's an example

Hotbird 6, 13°E
# A new channel has started in DVB-S Clear: Russian Travel Guide (Russia) on 11013.00MHz, pol.H SR:27500 FEC:3/4 SID:71 PID:369/625 English,881 Russian.

I understand from this that a new channel 'Russian Travel Guide' can be seen via the Hotbird sat located at 13 degrees East. Clear = Free to view. The frequency is 11013MHz, Horizontal polarity. But what's the SR, FEC, SID and PID?

Specifically with reference for my TM machine - where the users manual describes the Video PID, Audio PID and the PCR PID. I understand these are specific control details, but for what? E.g. Which of these should contain the 'PID' details described in the quote above? Also, is that PID 369/625 for English and PID:369/881 for Russian or something else entirely?

And I haven't started on cams yet! Which looks to me like a minefield with active target-seeking mines!!

SR = Symbol rate (commonly 27500)

FEC = Forward Error Correction How much of the frequency is used for error redundancy. A FEC of 1/2 uses half the signal as error checking and will be a robust signal although low quality (half the data stream is redundant info) A FEC of 7/8 will be a high quality signal but not robust as only 1/8th of the signal is used for error redundancy.

SID = Signal Identification (unique to one data stream on any one frequency)

PID = Program identification. The first number is the video stream, the second one the audio

Also, is that PID 369/625 for English and PID:369/881 for Russian or something else entirely?

Thats correct The video stream is obviously the same, audio 625 gives you English, 881 Russian. (Note - most receivers just allow you to change between audio soundtracks just by selecting a soundtrack - you dont need to worry about the actual numbers in 99.99% of cases.
