I've been asked to get an 'email enabled mobile phone' for a client who has some work for me.

My existing phone has something called W n W and another application 'web' that I've never accessed, plus I'm on a bog standard O2 tariff.

Would enabling either of these allow me to receive emails sent to my normal account, and if not, what is the cheapest phone that allows me to carry this out ?
I don't need to download attachments, just basic text.

Thanks in advance.

The first thing I would do is see if you're allowance allows data as they will hammer you for using data if not inclusive. Next step would be a cheap android phone the galaxy young springs to mind £80 and worth the money for you needs you could also install tapatalk app for quick access to the forum on the go. Hope this helps.

Thanks - The current account can have a £5 monthly 'bolt on' for 500MB of dat, which should be more than enough for just simple emails (no attachments)

500MB is more than enough for emails, I do a good amount of surfing of the forum etc with the same allowance.

And looking into the phone itself (2330), there is a set up for emails

So, a fiver extra per month and no phone change ;)
