Had a power cut here ...
only brief ..but when the power came back on ....I heard a loud clang outside ..and carl had swung to the extreme west an now will not move ..
The dish has overshot both the Gbox limits and presumably internal limit switches ...and now the motor simply wont move ...
Too dark now to check the damage ..but I suspect major motor damage as the Gbox still registers movement though nothing is moving ..
Gears stripped maybe ??
I feel sick atm ..
Doh!!!

Sorry to hear that.
I can understand it might pass the Gbox limits, as something could have happened when the power returned, but I'm surprised it managed to exceed the motors set limits.
Hopefully the damage isn't too bad.

I'm thinking the limit protect switch in the motor was faulty but I was unaware of it ..and so I was using/relying on the Gbox set limits.
What I can say is that all presets in the Gbox have been reset ...so the only thing protecting the motor were the Gbox limits.
So ,,it sailed on past this preset...and then passed the hard limit.
Just my luck I guess.
Had the dish gone East instead of West ...
Chances are this would not have happened.

Oh craps .. hope it's nothing serious. At least you'll now have more motivation to restore those 1224 motors :)

Tbh Alex I would never use anything else now on my main dish unless I was forced too, I would be confident of it moving a 2.4 CM, it just needs a few mods that I like doing anyhow, great bit of kit.

Well been disassembling since 5:30 this moening and only in the last 10 minutes have I been able to release the primary gear ..and am now able to swing the back plate and exoskelleton freely ...
No idea at this stage if any damage to the gearbox ..but the primary gear and worm drive look ok..
This job is nothing if not difficult ...made moreso by all my addons which too had to be removed.
Cause was definately the reset of the Gbox ...
..and it did not actually hit the limit switches ...on account it never reached 'em ..
These need to be repositioned ...but how ??
the micro switches look fixed ...
Is it even possible on a Motek H180 ..?
Anyone know ..and can advise ..
No idea if I can fix this yet ..but if I do then in order that this never happens again ..those limit switches need altering ...but I cant see how ?
rgds
A VERY tired VS..

When I did the install for one of these, I also couldn't see how those limit switches could be adjusted. Maybe you need to remove the front top half of the case? Seems excessively silly, if that's the case.

A stupid design throughout...

And the chances of removing that front top cover is practically nill ...short of cutting it off ..
Remember the grief with the 1224 and the cotter pin ..
same problem I suspect ..
Doh!!

Feedback I got recently from the UK importer of the Moteck H180 and the Jaeger 1224 was that the Moteck are the more robust motor. He gets far less returns for busted motors with the Moteck H180 compared to when he was importing the Jaeger 1224's. He thinks that the alloy used in the casing for the Moteck is a stronger alloy than was used in the Jaeger 1224.

Several years ago when I visited his gaff, he had a huge pile of busted Jaeger 1224's in a corner. I think he palletted them all up and sold them as a job lot to that SSS mob?

Them H180's might be a bítch to work on and badly designed but they supposed to be built with strong materials or at least that's the gubbins I got from the UK importer.

So ...are these motors still available new ..
just in case I do need a new gearbox ?

These motors have one thing in their favour ..
The gearbox /motor & worm drive are all replaceable without removing that awkward top front cover..

VS,

Yes, definitely still available, the UK Importer is just a few miles up the road from me, I assume RAD get their stocks from him?

VS,

If you need replacement parts, I have a second hand Moteck H180 here doing nowt.
I am happy to sell it at a sensible forum members rate if you decide to look for replacement parts, unless of course you wanna shell out hard earned green folding for a brand new one?

I got 4 x Jaeger 1224's here now so I don't think I am going to be using the Moteck H180 any time soon.

...So what do you want for it moonbase ?
It can't hurt to have spares anyhoo ..
Providing it is complete and doesn't break the bank ...
?
Hopefully the internals haven't changed any...

I'd be more interested in one of those 1224 motors... And, I think, Evan, you should make a working one out of your two 1224s - it shouldn't take a lot of work, I wouldn't have thought.
