Major Catastrophe ...

He thinks that the alloy used in the casing for the Moteck is a stronger alloy than was used in the Jaeger 1224.

If that's true then the Jaeger casing must be truly awful. I've drilled both the CM plate and the casing of my Motek and even with new bits it was catching like mad as chunks of alloy were ripping off both items.

Then of course there was this incident.

Poor design contributed to this with the single fixing point on one corner allowing for maximum rotational stress in strong wind. Luckily it was still under guarantee and after a few tedious exchanges I got a replacement after paying for the broken one to be sent back. I kept the original elevation bolt and used this along with some additional bracketry to add another fixing point onto the casing at the other rear corner. So far, it's stood up to windier conditions than were experienced the night it broke.

Best of luck getting that top plate off, unless it was copper slipped during installation. I will say in its defence that it hits the correct position every time so as long as precautionary measures are taken on installation it's not too bad a motor if you're an anorak, I probably wouldn't sell one to a paying customer!

I'd be more interested in one of those 1224 motors... And, I think, Evan, you should make a working one out of your two 1224s - it shouldn't take a lot of work, I wouldn't have thought.
Whilst I totally agree Alex..
..and have every intention of getting one going ..I want to restore the motek as well ..and since this would not require any major changes to the current structure ..would hopefully get me up and running quickly ...wheras I'd have to make major structural changes to fit a 1224 ..

Exactly why I built new steel structure under the Motek base plate ..
Thus I can drive inclination from a stronger central point ..
If I wanted to fit a 1224 I'd basically have to start again from scratch.
All in all its not a bad motor and shifts a LOT of weight easily ...but I dont like the poxy design for limit switch protection..
Now I've seen the results first hand.

The 1224's aint for sale, they for installs after negative feedback from last Moteck installation.... :)
Gotta keep the installers happy.

...So what do you want for it moonbase ?
It can't hurt to have spares anyhoo ..
Providing it is complete and doesn't break the bank ...

VS,

How does a Bulls Eye sound and you pay the postage on top. I might be able to get it just under the 10 kilo limit for Collect+ courier which I think is around £7.50p.
Its complete and working as I tested it out recently with a 1.2m channel master dish.

There is one thing to point out though, the outer side lug on the motor casing where the elevation bolt attaches looks like it has got a hair line crack in it through being tightened to much. It's rigid and in place with no play but I need to point it out for transparency. The other side lug is perfectly OK.

No worries if its no good for you.

If you can sort out the postage at your end ...on account I neither drive and have trouble getting around ..then you have a deal ..
Presumably Paypal is ok these days now you have an account ?

VS,

Yes, I can organise the postage at my end online and take it round to the nearest Collect+ gaff.
PayPal is OK.

Let me check to see if I have a strong enough box and pack it all up and weight it to see if its under 10kg.
I have the channel master plate that comes with it, do you want that as well? If you don't want the plate then it should be under 10kg for Collect+. If the plate is included it might tip it over the 10kg max weight for Collect+

I suppose I can always send the plate as a separate parcel?

Since we agreed £50 ...I dont mind paying say up to another £15-£20 for postage ..
So lump it all in together if you can get it around that figure..
cheers
The plate would be jolly useful..
but either way together or seperate is good

VS,

I will have a rummage around the loft tonight to get all the parts and check it all out and weight it. Will report back ASAP.

No probs mate ..
As soon as you ask for the dosh ..Ill paypal it to you ..
I'll PM my address now ..so you know Im on board..
..and again ..
thanks Moonbase

I always use parcel2go, for price comparisons, and as I've jsut found a Hermes collection point, not too far away, the last one didn't even require collection, which makes it slightly cheaper:

Ok ..tis reassembled ..
pointing South ...
But no movement at all ..
as mentioned last night The Vbox is registering pulses as if the motor is moving..
Pressing E or W ...results in motor movement ..and the first 2 gears rotate ,,but no drive getting to the Worm ..
So ..looks like a broken gear or stripped teeth ..
Luckilly this can be changed in a lump ..so will be needing that motor as soon as poss Moonbase..
cheers
VS

I shall also keep watching fleabay to see if any scrappers turn up ..
I want to make sure I have parts in case this happens again ..and they pull a 1224 on these moteks
;)
time to bring my tools indoors ..
nothing more to be done for now
Oh ..and they say these things come in 3s ..
Gotta buy a new fridge tomorrow ..
Defrosted Sunday due to severe icing up ..and now wont run cold..
I've a good mind to go outside and drop something to get it out of the way ..before I have a heart attack..

I'll take it apart once I have fitted the new one ..
Need it for reference in situe atm

So what about the cause of this incident, the Gbox going nuts after a power dip, is that normal behaviour?
How prevent this from happening again?
Something with a magnet switch with 230 VAC coil, take-over contact and manual reset switch?

The only good thing about this is it happened in the summer instead of the depths of a snowy January.
Hope you get it sorted soon bud;)

In a nutshell yep ..the Gbox dumping all memory and resetting after brief power outage.
Theres nothing to stop this happening again sadly ...as I can't see any way to alter the hardware limit switches to restrict the arc ...
I will be cutting away a small amount of steel from the base frame to allow a bit more arc swing ....as the limit switches may well have been only fractions from activation ...
I just can't believe they have these set in stone ....as not everyone will have a clean sweep of the full arc .
Maybe a wall that might hamper the dish movement ..so one needs more control ..
In my case not a wall but my own mod frame ...but I can get from 58E to 58W ok ...I just dont need 70 to 70 ...or whatever is set my Motek..
It's just a joke imo..
and not in a funny way.

If you're as lucky as I was with my Moteck VS, you may find the gearing is simply out of mesh, as I had the same problem when mine was stuck at one end-

https://www.satellites.co.uk/forums...ck-h180-gtp-1800am-36v-hh-motor.154766/page-5

I disassembled the motor and managed to realign the gearing (I think it was the final gear where it meshes with the large cog on the axle).
All will reveal itself in due course ..but would prefer just to get up and running for now ..
Alignment will take days as it is.
..once I am I will take the gearbox apart..
Dont suppose you know of a way to change the hardware limits do you Llew ?

VS what I meant is, that the Gbox shall never power-up again unattended.
So after a power dip, it must stay unpowered, until you press the reset switch.

Assuming, you will then notice things running wild, and then give an "emergency stop".
