A man fell to his death from a ladder as he tried to secure cabling which had been rattling in high winds.

Stephen Smith, 46, was attempting to fix the cable on his satellite dish, which came loose during last week’s gales, when he slipped and fell 30 feet.

He was taken to West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, Cumbria, with back and severe chest injuries.

The loss has left his family devastated, including his mother Marjorie Chambers.

She said: 'My son was a lovely man who touched the lives of many.'

Mr Smith had lived alone in Cleator Moor, Cumbria, but had been in a long-term relationship and was step-dad to three children.

His siblings, Debbie, Colette and Edward, were all deeply upset by the news of their brother’s death last Friday.

West Cumbria’s coroner has been informed.

A funeral service will be held next Tuesday at St Mary’s RC Church, Cleator.

Sad. Very sad.

At the end of the day, Telly of whatever nature is not anywhere near important enough to take risks.
