The only one I've heard of that sounds like that is NDS, this is the designer of the Videoguard encryption used by Sky and others.

Can't really add anything, tried a search on the MDS letters, but found everything but encryption systems.

I would guess that if it's not mentioned on any of the News groups or forums, then it isn't hacked.

MDS is a common acronym unfortunately. Its most common usage in a satellite/digital-tv context is for "Multipoint Distribution Systems" - a method of distributing signal, not of encrypting them.

In this particular case, the platform in question is TARBS (Television and Radio Broadcasting Services).
They distribute their signals via satellite but the subscriber needs a specific Tarbs decoder.
That decoder is manufactured by Mentor Data Systems. Aha! It is a bespoke decoder with a bespoke encryption system. So presumably this is what the "MDS" at lyngsat is referring to.
