Mediaset nears pay-DTT launch
Mediaset, the Italian broadcasting group controlled by the Berlusconi family, is due to launch a new pay-TV bouquet of thematic channels on digital-terrestrial television (DTT).
According to reports, the Milan based company will unveil its plans in the next week and should launch the service, called "Premium Gallery", by the end of January.
While information on the content structure and on the pricing model are not available at present, head of the DTT services of the group, Federico Di Chio, has always insisted on the need to develop a small bouquet of basic entertainment pay-TV channels priced under €10 per month. The bouquet would be low-priced in order to attract a potential market of 2 to 4 million familes that are unwilling to subscribe to a full premium pay-TV service like Sky Italia. That platform's cheapest entry level package is priced at €20 per month.
"Premium Gallery" will be composed of six TV channels and is likely to be structured in order to reach all the main potential targets with a focus on TV series, second-window movie rights, entertainment, documentaries, manga and kids programming. According to some information published on the internet, three channels already have names: Joy, Steel and Mya. One of these channels - Steel - will reportedly be based on action and sci-fi movies and TV series and be produced by NBC Universal Global Networks Italia, the local subsidiary of the American group that already produces the Sky Italia movie channel Studio Universal.
