Hello there,

On my research on CI cards, I wondered something and I don't know if you can help it but I should ask that. It's pretty specific question about CI cards...

Do every CI cards have High-level MMI (Man-machine interface) and Low-level MMI at the same time?

Or is it smart card's feature to support high level or low level MMI?

Thanks all in advance.

I think we need to first understand understand and agree your terminology, I have heard of CAM, conditional access modules, which when inserted into a set top box allow cards to be inserted. I have never heard of the term CI cards do we assume CI stands for common interface or something else?

Do I therefore assume you are asking if they support HDMI?

No, no I am not talking about HDMI.

Let me put it in this way.

As far as I know every CAM cards have a menu structure in them. (let's say which are compatible with CI)

Some of them pops in your television's own menu like it's the part of your TV menu (which is called High-Level Man Machine Interface)

Some of them opens a menu on your television by overlaying the menu that has been already saved in CAM/card (or maybe even in full screen mode). (which is called Low-Level Man Machine Interface)

I don't know if there are CAM/card slots without CI support but that's a requirement of Common Interface.

And I wonder if every CAM/card support both High level MMI and Low level MMI.

Towards the end of the following link

and it might be worth looking at specialist Linux sites, many of which have designs on PCMCIA enabling/interrogation.

Search online and have a read of EN50221, the Common Interface spec; in particular section 8.6, which explains MMI protocols.

Thanks all for your replies.

@Channel Hopper: I have checked the link but it uses only High-Level MMI. I will continue to check other topics as well on the same website which might be related with CA ;)

But I don't think I can get the information from Linux websites because according to my logic, they should have been using High Level MMI on computer systems because they are basically like functions in computer programs (well what could a programmer want? :p) and I don't think CA cards are able to use OSD of TV receiver to make Low Level MMI happen.

@Llew: EN50221 and R 206 001 explains some sections of MMI, however I have read both documents and there is no information whether the smart cards contain both high level MMI and low level MMI at the same time.

I also get the idea that smart cards include both MMIs depending a paragraph on R 206 001 in italic at below:

9.8.4 Mandatory Requirements
All hosts shall be able to support at least one MMI session. The session may be either high level or low level at the discretion of the application.

Well if either using one of them is a requirement, I thought smart cards should include both information about both MMIs.
