I'm new have been happily posting away but now it seems that my posts need a moderators approval before they appear. Have I transgressed?

No, just a standard forum security and anti spam function. Any posts by new members with certain keywords in will go to the moderation queue, hopefully to be approved quickly, but it will of course depend how many mods are on the forum at any given time.
