Police uncover TV box scam
Sep 12 2006

By Hywel Trewyn, Daily Post

NORTH Wales Police have nailed a sophisticated scam in which computer hackers obtained pay-for-view television free.

A house in Anglesey was the centre of an international operation which took several months to carry out.

Officers took out four search warrants on properties on Anglesey, Leeds, Stoke-on-Trent and Derby.

Four men were arrested in connection with conspiracy to defraud. The offences were allegedly committed by hacking.

A North Wales Police spokeswoman said: "The conspiracy to defraud was linked to by-passing the security on set-top boxes on pay-for-view television."

A number of TV companies have been hit by the fraudsters, including well-known household names such as NTL and Telewest.

The alleged fraud has cost the companies huge sums of money in lost revenue.

The perpetrators were caught after trying to "modify" digital set-top boxes and "smart cards" belonging to the TV companies.

Although the alleged fraud has nothing to do with Sky and their boxes, the media giant's programmes could also have been affected financially by this breach in security.

NTL spokeswoman Alexandra Legg, said: "How they did that and how much it might have cost is not being revealed."

She said the scam was spotted by investigators working for NTL's own fraud and security team. It allowed people to see subscription channels free, and then pass that information on to other users.

Steve Burch, chief executive officer at NTL Telewest, said: "We take a zero tolerance approach to those who unlawfully access TV content through the unauthorised modification of our digital set-top boxes and smart cards.

"Our fraud and security team has worked hard with the North Wales police and other law enforcement agencies to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

"We'd like to thank them for their continued support."

NTL is the UK's largest cable operator providing digital television, broadband and communications services to homes and businesses.

The scam is a serious breach of security for a company which prides itself on providing services to five million residential customers, and reaching 85% of UK businesses.

Many of its customers pay around £30 for a service which includes digital TV, broadband internet and telephone.

The four men who were arrested have been bailed to appear at St Asaph police station on January 10.

The three-month period allows officers from North Wales Police's high-tech crime unit to go through the evidence before they are in a position to bring any charges.

Dudez had a disk crash and may well have lost the entire database.

The article could tie in with the shack, but aside from the geography of the addresses, are there any other factors which make a connection?

Have read of rumours of arrests of some shack admin/mod few days back and came across this article today.

Anyway, I guess and hope these guys will be released, as has mostly been the case.

I think there MIGHT be a link with the shack but there is no concrete connection - Time will tell.

I think playing with that stuff, there was always going to be someone looking over the shoulder. It was always just a matter of time.

That's why most forums including this one don't touch it at all.

I know how to and how much (and where else to go, assuming it's still there).... :D

Not revealing it though as it's a no-cable talk forum here.... :p

Agree - we are just having a general chat about a forum and not asking info on how to mod cc boxes, which of course is illegal and may be punishable by a ban O-Ha .

Just for the record, I have not managed to do anything to one of them boxes, cos it's too damned complicated for me, much easier buying a satellite setup and a cam or two.... :D

Well I would guess that the lack of appearances to refute the rumours would indicate that.
