My Satellite Setup
A little less analogue, and a lot more crap.

Reports coming in of some damaging solar storms for tonight and tomorrow.

Magnetometers on earth are registering Kp activity in excess of level 5 which is potentially damaging to satellites.

Interesting Stuff CH ...
..and makes me wonder if there is a possibility of lnb damage since these are at the focus of a dish capable of concentrating radiation from space..?
I also wonder if lnbs disconnected ..and remaining unpowered but still in situe ..would reduce the chances of this happening ..?

I'm guessing that powering down ..disconnecting the lnb ...and wrapping up the feed in aluminium foil ..would suffice in extreme solar conditions ...
..just a theory of course..
..and it would have to be extreme..
also ...dipping the dish if its a moveable ..and pointing as low as possible to the horizon would help ..since the more atmosphere the radiation passes through ..the more is absorbed and/or dissipated..

Just finally got around to ordering mine, at long, long last.

Went for a twin, at just under 20 notes.

Where did you get that from Tivù?

My Black Ultra single cost me something like 15 plus VAT from a local dealer

2012-03-12 12:50 UTC Geomagnetic Storm Underway

Geomagnetic storming reaching the G2 (Moderate) level is underway. Continued geomagnetic activity reaching the G3 (Strong) level is likely between now and the end of March 13 as the parade of recent coronal mass ejections affect Earth. Meanwhile, the Solar Radiation Storm continues its decay and is currently at the S1 (Minor) level. Region 1429 remains complex, but is showing signs of weakening. No significant Radio Blackout events have been observed in the last 24 hours, so no further significant activity is currently expected after March 13. That said, continued activity is possible and any subsequent events would change that outlook. Updates here as conditions warrant
 
Does that mean also that it would be dangerous to be in front of a large dish twiddling the LNB at this time of the year,during the equinox ? For example last week the sun was behind the 28.2e satellites at around 12.30 pm, so if I am standing in front of the dish would I get a blast of solar energy in my face ?

No, but isn't that illegal in Cyprus?.....unless it's in the privacy of your own home....

Thanks, yes that last one was about 30 seconds exposure (at ISO 200, F2.0) as they where quite weak, but the stronger ones from last week where taken with about 5-15 seconds exposure. If I had a better camera I could increase the ISO and use a shorter exposure but for me anything about ISO 400 and it starts to get quite grainy and dirty looking. Obviously with these exposure times a tripod is a must.
