Motor Memory Woes

My Satellite Setup
Dreambox 7020, HH120 Discq notor with Triax 1.1m
I am having trouble with my motorised system and the company that installed it many years ago is no longer in business.

I have what is supposed to be a 1m Triax dish (based in Sheffield UK) that says it is at an angle of 55. This feeds from the LNB to a Manhattan H-H mount which is set at an angle of 24.5. The motor then goes back (approx 15-20m) to a Hi Isolation Cable Switch A-B box that can be switched to feed either the Dreambox 7020 S or a 2CI 0 GbSat (as it is quick to come on so is for general use).

I am having problems in that the positions in the motor seem to be changing. It is set for say Astra 2 on position 11 in the motor and works fine from the GbSat. I then use the Dreambox and it is ok until I change satellites and which point it seems to not go back to the correct position. I can sometimes switch to the GbSat and it recalls the correct preset but sometimes the Dreambox really upsets things and sends the motor funny (Astra 2 position when looking at the dish would have been taken to just west of Thor). I then have to use the GbSat and manually set up all the positions again (Goto X function does not seem to work at all).

A few days ago I could not get any picture but the Signal strength read 89% but no Signal quality at all, the motor would not even turn using the receivers. I looked at the connections and all seemed fine and manually pushed the h-h to see if not seized and afterwards the Dreambox (but not the GbSat) could move the motor. All is set up again but there is something really wrong and I would appreciate some help in both confirming that the h-h & dish settings are correct for my location and any ideas on what may be causing my problems.

If the setup needs replacing what would be the best dish/mount combination to use nowadays and would it be better to move to 36V positioning as I believe the speed of movement is faster? Any advice most welcome.

Thankyou in advance.

Have you ever had the two boxes working before on the same motor or has it never worked properly.

Are both on Diseqc 1.2... and if so, are both setup to mirror the diseqc numbers (ie: Astra 2 = 11 on both etc..)

Are any diseqc 1 or 1.1 switch options on ….on either.

We use a lot of satellite receivers... swapping motors setup for diseqc 1.2 &/or USALS.. you can have problems with some but mostly they are happy to work like that. Some USALS 'compatible' stbs & motors re use the diseqc 1.2 system as a reprogrammed USALS so wiping out diseqc 1.2 positions.

Can you use USALS instead on both?

Those high isolation switches aren't 100% .. can't remember motor problems but certainly RF bleed is common and can interfere with the second box and both boxes can display channels on the same band/ polarity (consider using the LOOP THROUGH if that is a problem)

Have you tried one box (without the switch) then the other.

They both mirror each other but not sure about diseqc 1 or 1.1 requirement (only have option for lots of parameters on dreambox and not 100% sure what to put on - currently have it set for 1.2).

Up until a few months ago all was working ok but I did try putting GotoX on the Dreambox (which has never worked) and perhaps this wiped them out as you suggest.

Unfortunately as I can not get GotoX working on the Dreambox I still need to use preset numbers and set these up. Is there any idiots guide (search on internet produces lots of conflicting info) on how to set it up properly?

Also as per original post I am not sure if the dish and h-h settings are correct.

Can you use the receiver that does control the motor and switch motor control off on the other one for now.

They are currently both working now that the motor moves again. I have set up Astras, Hptbird & Eutelsat W2 manually but found that I must use the Dreambox for setup as if use the other one it is ok but the Dreambox is off when recalling it (suspect that the receiver in the Dreambox is not as good as the GbSat one so more picky on alignment).

I am avoding playing with USALS/GotoX for now as your earlier reply (thank you) said they could overwrite the existing channel information.

I am concerned with the install as the dish is set to 55 and the h-h motor to 24.5 and from reading some of the set up information on here it tends to state that the motor needs to have the latitude setting which would be 53 degrees here whereas the dish has that.

Not sure what the readings mean and lost the Manhatten H-H instructions so still trawling the net.

Weird!

They are definitely ar*e about face ................ unless you are looking at the wrong scale on the Motor: They tend to have a Latitude Scale on one side of the bracket and an Elevation scale on the other. Do check.

Mind you, the crazy Dish Elevation setting gives the game away.

*how many satellites did you used to get in total..

*where are you in the UK roughly

*If you can get USALS to work on both .. you won't need Diseqc 1.2... far better and any new satellites added will be found.

I'll check tomorrow and see if there are any other markings. I'll also try harder to find the original H-H motor instructions as this should shed some light on it.

When the installer initially set it up I could get about 8 satellites (it was all they set up on the motor positions). It would go from Hellas Sat at 39 East to Hispasat at 30 W.

Nearest major city is Sheffield.

I would like to get both working but I am not sure that the installer set things up correctly hence the initial worry about the readings off the motor. The image that I use in the Dreambox is Gemini and I am not sure how good this would be for USALS (I beleive that there termi is GotoX but not sure).
