That would be a path on your dreambox? You set permissions using chmod (e.g. from a telnet session from your PC) but why would you want to do this (unless you're sharing or it is open to the internet?)?

In Windows, right click the folder user1 and click sharing and set permission there for each user or the group all the users are in.

Or have I misunderstood?

& Welcome to the forum :)

well ehm... my dreambox is on the internet cuz i connect to it from wherever i can....
so i didnt want tot give root login to friends and ppl to access a few folders on the box..
hence i was thinking of creating a login for each user (maybe not more than 3 anyways) with read and write permissions...

thx guys

I see... You need a basic UNIX or LINUX tutorial.

CHMOD is for setting permissions on a file or folder.

Create a group called myUsers and then create your user accounts. Put these users into the group myUsers and then give the group myUsers access only to the folders that you want them to access.

h--p://www.zzee.com/solutions/chmod-help.shtml
h-tp://www.scit.wlv.ac.uk/cgi-bin/mansec?1+chmod
h-tp://cfa-www.harvard.edu/cf/user_meetings/unix_groups/changing.html

Dummies Guide for UNIX might be helpful. My unix stuff is at home and I'm not there so that's the best I can do OTTOMH.

And Google ;)

Hi Dr Gonzo
Sorry for the late reply but only just caught up on this thread. Not sure if you're still having problems.

All I can say is from my past experience I could never get it to work when I just created a new user on my PC. It HAS to be your original user info (when you originally installed windows) This was the only way I could get a mount and record properly. In fact I even re-installed windows and made sure I only had 1 user on so I know this was the reason (drastic measures and not ideal for most people but at the time I was mad beyond belief and it became an obsession to get CIFS recording working - and work it did and still does)

Let me know how you go.

@ csk25 are you sure that 192.168.0.1 is the path to your PC and not to your router?

On a separate issue:

Does anybody know if it is possible to write from a dm500 to a CIFs share on a NAS box like the Netgear SC-101?

Sorry if dumb question. SC-101 still in wrapper.

I was asking myself just the same thing. I am an IT geek.
I am looking in to Dreambox and haven't decided on Dm500s or 7020.

In theory you should be able to substitute shares to anything on a network so long as you have permissions. Just alter the URL to the IP or share on NAS.

(Network attached storage in case you were wondering. ) You could probably even have a crossover cable and a stand alone Networked HDD.

\\x.x.x.x\hdd\movie x's representing IP of the server or NAS hard disk.

????? ?????

Yers, well, we're all a bit geek, but some of us are more geeky than others. We do speak the same language though - "There's no place like 127.0.0.1" and all that.

7020 or 500s, depends on what you want to do. I got a 500s: didn't want to go for 7020 while the 7025 was still vaunted. 500s much cheaper and does most if you can do CIFS.

OTOH if you want two tuners and a DVD-RW, you could get a Reelbox. If you're a real penguin you might even help the boys with the soft.

I saw the reelbox. It's quite a bit of Kit. I noticed the Reel Avantgard too with 4 tuners and HDMI. Where's the drool smiley?

I'm not much of a Penguin. Was an IT guy in the games industry so know a fair bit but somehow fluent Penguin never stuck. Bit like learning French for me.

Whatever I use. I want to use the box as an alternative to the kit most get lumbered with.

Anyway.. enough thread hijacking from me.

Have you tried deleting the mount setting and recreating it? Have you tried with your PC firewall turned off? Vista or XP? Can you browse the mounted drive using File Mode?

Guys I was in the same position.I could not mount cifs.I tried just now following pcd`s guide exactly and it would still not mount. Then by luck I thought my toddler had kicked out the network cable so I rebooted the dreambox and tried the mount again......and it failed...just joking it worked maybe a reboot is the answer..

I have a problem with mounting.... I got it to work once but had my system updated which lost my original settings. Now I can't get it to mount. I have a network disk and it has a samba server. I can mount the disk on my computers (Mac OSX X 3). But I'm really struggling to get the Dreambox to mount it. Before the trick was to do it from the webserver. I never could get it from the DB remote. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi people
Does this method of mounting (using CIFS) record well?
I last tried some method or other ages ago and the recordings where quite poor ( jumping and missing bits ) so I gave up and blamed the DB500 for just being a bit rubbish network wise.
If you get fault free recordings, I might well have another go!
restore my faith!
thanks
matt

cifs is just a name for the window filesystem. Just follow the instructions posted and you should be able to set it up no problem.
