It's my first proper winter with the motorised dish up and I'd just like some opinions on what to do when weather conditions are in the minus. Is it best to regularly move the dish to prevent it freezing up in icy conditions or is it better to park it on a satellite and leave it there?

I've only had one occasion, even up here in the arctic wastes of North Yorkshire, when the motor has briefly succumbed to the cold and refused to move.

Frankly, I shouldn't bother taking any precautions at all.

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
IMHO, it probably depends on HOW cold your location, and how old and worn your dish mount ( = worn &/or congealed the lubricant in the motor/actuator because both get worse over time and use), is - as well, of course, as the temperature range for which it is (IF that is actually stated "somewhere") to work. "Age" matters (as a lot of us unfortunately are now finding out :().

Never experienced any problems in last 20 years now with 2 motorised systems just spray WD40 on Dish & Lnb grease up threads & bolts,
Most motors can operate between +40C to - 20C the only problem will occur if we get a Siberian cold snap of -40C

I change my about motors every 10 years & currently have two STAB-USALS HH100 Rotorsat Satellite Motor made in Italy less that 3 years old

OpenBox X5 on a 1 meter motorized dish.
And now a 10 foot "C" band dish.

Custom built PC
My Location
Deep in the Boonies in the central Sierra Nevada mountains of California.
Way up North (above the 90) we wrapped the motors with pipe heating tape and then a thermal blanket and use a thermostat to turn them on and off, on when below freezing off when above.

Works good on LNB's also.

Rather you than me - anything North of me (51N!) is "my " Arctic nightmare! (Yup, a "softie" nowadays - and I had a few VERY cold "experiences" when I was "relatively" young, but, Hey, I like being warm - now sitting in a shirt & shorts to write this without the c/h running full blast because the house is VERY well insulated :) - all the time, and I think my motor does as well and so I think your motor(s) likes it too.:))

I was sorely tempted to put on a long-sleeved shirt a few days ago.

Love the isolated rural life ( carp broadband ) good community spirit ( neighbor helps neighbor ) and the 45km drive to nearest village or 125 km to town and local hospital.

Way of life spot on1.png

But we digress somewhat from topic:-ohcrap
