Moving to Plusnet Fibre

I'm currently with BE (ADSL) and am looking to switch to Plusnet when fibre finally gets switched on later this month on our exchange.

Does anyone have any experience with moving from one supplier to another when moving to fibre? I can't afford to be without internet for long as I work from home so I'm a bit nervous of moving. In the past I've only moved from Virgin to BE and that was easy as you could run the two services together with no downtime.

Also, anyone got any experience with Plusnet's fibre router? I need to be able to do port forwarding to a few devices and use a dynamic DNS service. How often does the IP address change?

The other concern is I am quite far from my green cabinet (about 650m following the roads), but as it is closer than the exchange (1.1km) I'm hoping I can get some improvement on speed. With BE I typically get about 12Mb/s down and 1.1Mb/s up. Hoping to get a bit more upload for hosting a Slingbox or two.

If the upload limits and traffic shaping on Virgin weren't to strict I would have gone back to them a long time ago.
 
As far as I know you should be able to use any router as I think Openreach will install a new demarc point with a fibre modem to which you attach your Plusnet (or any other router) to

Thanks, I got that impression from reading their FAQ but if I can use the router supplied it would good at least for starters. At the moment I use the supplied BE SpeedTouch ADSL router which I find it OK even though I read bad reviews about it.
 
Been with Plusnet fibre for almost two years, the transition from Demon to Plusnet was flawless and I have never found a reason to complain.
I used my original Draytek router which I have a no- ip account set up in, from what I see the IP address only seems to change when I reboot the router which is not often, maybe weeks or months apart.
You can also have a fixed ip for a small upgrade fee to your account.
The other nice thing is if you recommend a friend then you get a discount off your bill, I get about £5 off with that feature.
 
Thanks, that's good to hear. I was a Demon user back in the dial up days! One of the few that officially supported the Amiga...

I don't suppose you have VPN dial-on on your Draytek router? I tried to do that with one recently but couldn't figure out how to get internet access once connected to it.

Have tried but being honest I could not get my head around it.
 
I've been with Plusnet (as Force9) for ages. Upgraded to fibre to cabinet a few months ago. First oops; they forgot to send a router so if you haven't got it a couple of days before changover, shout. By the time it arrived I'd worked out that I could use my D-Link router and still am. Having some problems occasionally losing connection (usually between 2 and 6 in the afternoon), but that's down to BT who are looking for some sort of interference
