MPC upgrades to super-fast network
Visual effects house The Moving Picture Company (MPC) has installed a new network in its Wardour Street facility based on the 10-Gigabit Ethernet standard, claimed to be the first such installation in the UK. The new network offers speeds of up to 10 billion bits a second.
MPC is noted for its computer effects for both film and television, most recently Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Sunshine. The new system will allow large 2K and 4K image files to be moved quickly around the facility.
The technology was installed by the systems integration division of reseller Root6 and is based on OM3 fibre optic and CAT7 copper cables. Root6 had to re-train its staff for this job and invest in new tooling techniques and the relevant test and measurement gear. The installer had to adapt its usual validation practices to meet 10-Gigabit specifications, although the standards involved have yet to be approved.
Work took four months to complete and was carried out in two phases, beginning with the machine room and CAT7 cabling before moving on to the fibre optic infrastructure throughout the entire building.
"The switch to 10-Gigabit Ethernet is a huge order of magnitude," commented Phil Crawley, head of the Root6 systems integration team, "and far removed from traditional television technology. Currently you'd be more likely to encounter a system like this at big internet companies such as Google or MySpace. High-end post is a data-centric environment with a huge and seemingly endless appetite for bandwidth and it is certain that others will follow MPC's lead in adopting this technology."
