Brazilian João Gilberto, the father of Bossa Nova, which brought together modern jazz and samba, has died aged 88.

It became a massively popular musical style in the late 50's and 60's.

The album Getz/Gilberto, featuring Gilberto, wife Astrud and jazz tenorist Stan Getz, became a a million seller worldwide. I still have my old LP (much played).

I'd not heard of him before this but seems hugely influential.

Possibly his greatest legacy is that every electric piano and synthesiser, cheap or unobtanium has a bossa nova button.
