He died 37 years ago but Francis Dacre Coats was a hard working man who fought in both world wars. In WW1 he was in the Scottish Highlanders until it was discovered he was a time served cabinet maker and was immediately transferred to the Air Corp to work on the wooden bi-planes, which was where he learnt the skills necessary to be a motor mechanic, which was his chosen profession from then on. When he retired he took up oil painting as a hobby but occasionally reverted back to working with wood in both cabinet making and marquetry. below is a photograph one of his marquetry landscapes which I have always admired
