n00b looking for some advice..

My Satellite Setup
** no satellite system yet (looking to change from Cable to motorised satellite system) **

first post - so apologies before hand for any (ok all of the n00b questions) - but I've had a search round here and on the internet in general and all of the talk is quite teckky to me (at the minute - but I'm hoping to pick it up and learn more)

I'm looking to move from cable to satellite (good move I hear most of you saying! LOL!) - main reason being the cost. Currently I have a V+ box downstairs and an older box in my upstairs bedroom and with the phone and broadband (and movies and sport) it's around £100 a month (and I only get 1 HD channel!).. which are the main reasons I'm looking to change - I also don't really want to be limited by one satellite supplier - which is why I've not just cancelled and went with Sky as I know that there are more options and you can get foreign broadcasts etc.

Can anyone suggest what type of equipment would suit my needs? - I did a quick search (just now) and came across:

Technomate TM6900 Super HD
DiSEcQ Motor Mount
Wall braket and installation kit

for £429.99 - it also has an option for CAM or modules Dragon/Trex or Diablo CAM for £89.99.

Can anyone point me in the direction of the channels this will be able to receive and whether it is a decent price? what would a ball park installation price be for the above as well??
 
What EXACTLY are you wanting?? With satellite the computations are endless.
For example if you want the full sky package the costs stack up like this (prices are approximate rounded to the nearest tenner - you can get the latest exact prices from the website


full package - £40
multiroom (same channels on second box elsewhere in house) - £10 per extra room
high def additional premium - £10 per box

so you are already up to 60 quid/month just to have the full sky package in hd in your living room, 80 if you want 2 room hd multiroom!

Foreign subscriptions are an expensive game- some of them make sky look cheap if you ant the football and have to use a uk reseller :D


Or you can go with Freesat and pay no subs at all of course and get a vastly reduced choice of channels.....

thanks very much for the reply! :) - I realise I was a bit vague in my first post now! LOL!

I'm mostly after what Freesat offers (but want the option of more channels as well (if possible) i.e. foreign channels like maybe Sky Sports Italy for football etc as well as maybe some more HD channels as my 50" Samsung Plasma is a little under utilised with the 1 HD Channel I've been afforded till now!) I pay a lot for movies and sports I don't watch all the time - although the perk (softener) for me was that I got Setanta for free in my current deal.. although I'm a Rangers supporter (for my sins) and all of the Rangers home games aren't broadcast on Setanta (only the away games!!) - so I was having to go on the internet and try and watch streams i.e. ART or Al-Jazeerah Sport - if there was an option to pick some of these channels up on my TV in better quality instead of streaming then that would be ideal.

I've also just come back from holiday today (I was in Malta) and the pub I was in had a Dreambox set up and he had Sky Sports Italy, Abu Dhabi Sports, Kuwait Sports etc - I think the satellite he was using was called Hotbird 13E?? so if I could get the freesat channels with maybe some more sports channels and any other HD channels available then that would be ideal. I'm not really sure what equipment etc is needed though. Will the equipment I've posted in the first thread work for what I intend or are there other/better options out there??
 
Theres a wealth of channels available in the clear in the skies above Europe - the Hotbird cluster being home to probably the biggest selection of weird and wonderful channels from right around the world.

You must realise that although theres a lot of high def channels available, its a premium product and attracts a premium price. Take Sky Italia as an example - for the HD package with sports you will need to pay around £1300/year for it if you use a uk seller.....

There are various packages popular in the UK for sports, most of which require subscription. For football you are probably best waiting a few wekes to find out exactly who will be carrying which leagues next season, things may change.
 
A cheap (In regards to the dish,mount) fixed system maybe better for a self confesed "noob", if your doing the work yourself. In the Glasgow area there are plenty of Cowboys who claim to install motorised systems but the end product is like something of a "Watchdog" report! If football's your thing then there are some cracking deals to be had at the mo, but like Analogue said it's best to wait just now & see what broadcaster has what rights. The Spanish preimer league has been cracking this year.

I'm in Edinburgh so hopefully there'll be a descent installer here as I'm not planning on doing the work myself.. i'll need to search that out nearer the time..

how much would a typical motorised install cost with the equipment mentioned in my first post??
 
My mate paid £160 for a motorised install (He already had purchased the equipment) I think it was a company called S.A.S. out of Glasgow.

would the equipment I mentioned in the first post pick up Hotbird 13E in Edinburgh? if not what would need changing??

Also if it does pick up Hotbird 13E and I wanted to view the Al Jazeera Sport channels.. I take it I just purchase a subscription card and pop it in?? I'm thinking Al Jazeera might be a good bet as they have the rights for the champions league for the next 3 seasons and also have the SPL, Spanish and Italian football..

You dont mention a dish size, but anything from 65cm to 80cm+ will be fine. The built in card reader in the Technomate handles Viaccess 3.0 so yes a Al Jazeera card would work without the need to buy a Viaccess CAM (Saving you between £30 to £40) But from what I have read Art has the SPL rights for next season! I have an Al Jazeera sports card and love the amount of football on offer & for £59 for 12 Months well, you can understand why!!:p;)

thanks!! :) - sorry I meant to say the intended dish will be 80 cm.. the front of my building faces almost directly due south as well and my living room is to the front of the house - there is already a Virginmedia coax cable coming from the junction box on my front wall through my living room wall so I would imagine once they come and remove their boxes and cables and any other equipment that it should be quite an easy install.. fingers crossed anyway..

r.e. the SPL - not really sure what will be happening next season.. this season I had to get streams from all over the place for the home games! LOL!.. the away games were fine though as I have Setanta.. even without the SPL the Al-Jazeera pack seems very good value..

thanks for clarifying r.e. CAM and card etc as its pretty confusing! LOL!.. :)
