I lived in Orpington for four years and can't recall seeing any in the park lake, swimming round between the supermarket trollies and car tyres...

The Polish probably had them for Christmas with trimmings.

Talking of birds, I managed to capture a robin signing his little heart out on the top of a tree at Wisley yesterday (butterfly month in the greenhouse).

Trouble is, the video is about 200MBs long and imagebam isn't having any of it (at the moment ). It's also upside down.

Will try to upload elsewhere when I can.

Also sans evidence, SWMBO got me off the loo just now, all in a flap (Her, not me) to come look at a Sparrow Hawk sitting nonchalantly on the edge of the bird bath.

Vermin, to many people still, as the result of claims they destroy beech forest and decimate the Reds - claims which don't necessarily stand up to scientific scrutiny.

It's not long since the legal obligation to report grey squirrel sightings in private gardens to the Local Authority was abolished.

We have them in great numbers around here - they seem to be more prolific than Rats. Don't mind them myself.

Nice pic!

We still have red squirrels here in Donegal. Don't ever recall seeing any greys, but I'm sure someone will correct me. It's one of their last strongholds in these islands. Greys simply don't belong here - vermin. North America, fine, British Isles not good. They out compete the native reds, and carry a disease to which they are immune, but is fatal to reds. That definitely makes them unwelcome in my estimation.

I don't think I've ever seen a grey squirrel here. There were a few red squirrels around the garden a while back and I sometimes see one when I'm out and about but not too many.

Slightly off topic but the site that covers cruise ship ports (we had a thread about a hurricane in Bermuda which featured one of their webcams) recently added a wild life cam in upstate New Jersey. Lots of squirrels, deer, the odd raccoon and loads of wild birds...including what I think are Red Cardinals. Link here :

Hi, I was going to make a few nest boxes, but after a trip to a type of pound land, they had some cheap ones at £2.99 so I bought four, the next time I get my big saw out I will replace them with my own made ones if nothing is nesting in them :).

"Two-ninety-nine Land" doesn't have much of a ring to it - but just so long as your tits are happy
