NDS wins Malaysia's Astro
NDS has won a major Asian account in the shape of Malaysia’s Astro system, from Kudelski.
The Malaysian pay-TV operator will progressively migrate its existing satellite pay-TV services to NDS’s VideoGuard conditional access system, ditching Kudelski’s MediaGuard. Following the deal between Astro’s owner Measat Broadcast Network Systems and NDS, the technology company will now provide both conditional access and middleware for the Astro DTH platform.
Astro, up until a few years ago, was suffering massive local piracy of its signals. In 2005 it was claimed that DTH piracy “had dropped 45% this year” because of an improved new card issue.
Astro has been using NDS’s MediaHighway operating system, once the property of Canal+ Technologies and now owned by NDS, since 1999. But it has also been using MediaGuard conditional access – once also the property of Canal+ Tech, but now owned by Nagra France, part of the Kudelski Group.
“The utilization of VideoGuard CAS will provide Astro with a single and consolidated CAS/middleware provider resulting in enhanced ability to leverage functionality between the two technologies, cost efficiencies and speed to market,” Measat Broadcast Network Systems said in a statement.
Astro is Malaysia’s only DTH broadcaster with over 2 million subscribers, or 38% of Malaysia’s TV homes. As one of Asia’s largest multichannel TV businesses, the contract represents good business for NDS.
