I think this is the right section.

I have an upload of 350k and download of about 1.5M. Its the max i can get on BT line....cable dosnt exist in my area.

Anyone have any bright ideas of any other method of getting a better deal?
 
I'm on a standard BT copper line and get 6 Megabit downstream and 480 Kbits upstream, but it may be that you are too far away from the exchange to get more than what you have. The only other service is the point to point wireless, but it is normally very expensive.
 
Yes, distance from the exchange is crucial - and the distance the cable takes might be much longer than the direct route. Other things such as the line being on overground poles (rather than underground) can reduce performance too.

Do you have a broadband router now? If so can you log into it and see if it tells you the Signal margin (or SNR) and line attenuation? From the info on that screen, and your current connection rate, it is normally possible to work out the maximum the line will take.

Yes mate, im quite a distance from my exchange. There is another exchange a lot closer but im over the other side of the border. lol.

@polomint, went into my router webinfo, and cant find anything about snr.

It would ne nice to see BT lay some fibreoptic, really we are lagging behind in term of SE Asia, parts of europe.

I was just hoping on another way such as satellite (but u still need your line to upload)..these new USB wireless modems by o2, tmobile etc look interesting, but not too sure how stable they are and they will be expensive for the activities i am involved in.

I am grasping at straws I know, its just a tad frustrating that we seem to be lagging behind in the UK a bit.

I was in Japan few months ago and I was astonished!

If you are a fair distance from your exchange then unfortunately you will probably be stuck for the time being.

While I agree that other countries may be far ahead of the UK in speed, one thing the UK is good for is coverage. I started this thread a while back (http://www.satellites.co.uk/satellite/computer-discussion/78386-rural-broadband.html) showing an exchange with 33 house lines, which is ADSL enabled. While at times I would like faster broadband being nowhere near a big city I'm glad the time and money has been spend upgrading the smaller, no doubt less profitable, exchanges rather than pouring all resources into the big cities - there is more to a broadband service than just the maximum speed.
