Martin, the basics are there is a lower cut off frequency and an upper. Both go up as ionisation increases. That means 80 opens at night when ionisatoin is weak and 20m and above open during the day when ionisation is strongest.

Ionisation to the east is strongest in the morning, and to the west in the evening.

With a radio like that, 27.555 USB should be alive with EU stations around this time of year and on 27.025 AM (I think) you'll find "the super bowl" with any amounts of US stations running silly power (massive amps pushing out many many KW)

Around 29 mhz ish on AM you should find a repeater on top of the empire state building linked upto another repeater up on a mountain somewhere

Also between 29 and 31 AM you might catch US Police/Fire or Ambulance (They might have moved now because I haven't listened out for them for quite a few years now)
^^^^^^^With the right atmospheric conditions (or "when the skip is in" as we used to say round here)^^^^^^^

If you have access to a VHF set listen around on 2M, theres nearly always chatter on 2M and you should find a few internet linked IRLP/Echolink repeater nodes on 2M near you too

[EDIT]
Just a thought, can you use that radio with a foundation licence?

Have a look down here 5.616 (or there abouts), you should pick up transatlantic air comms and here 3.413000 shannon volmet giving information to aircraft

(what ever you do don't key the mic anywhere near these freqs)

I think for the lower freqs like those you'd get good results from a longwire antenna (maybe something to look into if the antenna you have is a bit deaf down there)

Now a days there are loads of ways to make long wire antenna. Like wrapping it around PVC pipes to make it directional, using parasitic resonators, or making ladders and other shapes. And this new fangled fractal antenna thingy. Bit of a mindbender that.

In the old days this was all experimental stuff. Now there is loads on the internet that actually works like they say it should.

Still have insulators and wire but much prefer Band I and III :(
