New boy advice please!

I'm new to this so bear with me!
I'm fed up of paying the exhorbitant cash to Sky and am looking to get a receiver where I dont have to stump up the cash.
Any advice please?
What are "patched" receivers?
Does this mean you can get free channels, including the subscription channels, sky sports etc?

Patched receivers allow you to open certain pay tv services for free. Although with providers tightening their encryptions, the numbers drop regularly. You CANNOT get Sky pay channels by this method.

You want Sky = you pay.
