new dish setup woes

i might be setting my new dish up myself with help from a friend
and ive been looking on _www.dishpointer.com for the elevation and so on
the instructions to point the dish+motor to south but i cant from where my house is positioned.south goes right through the house
i think the nearest satellite i would find would be 5e thor, would a 80cm dish be big enough to pick this up

5e is Sirius 4, Thor is at 1w. An 80cm will receive Sirius but you'll have difficultly with reception from the Nordic beam.

Position the dish best for a clean sweep of the arc. You can check this using a compass. Take a browse at the two set up guides below in my signature for motor set up.
 
Not to sure what you mean by goes straight threw the house. Could you not put it at the other side of your house ?
 
If due south points directly at your house from where you wanted to put the dish, you can't put it there if you want to pick anything up.

You will either have to raise the dish above the gutter line some, put the dish on the other side of the house, or find somewhere else to put it.
 
what i mean is if i put my dish to true south there is no way it will get there without hitting the house
i know from this i will only get satelittes to the east not to worried about the west
so where would i initially point my dish and motor to set it up
if i put the dish on the other side of my house i will only see the west satellites
 
If you use USALS to setup as per rolf's guide, you can theoretically choose whichever sat you want. Ideally as close to due south as you can, Hotbird maybe?

Alternatively, with a longish pole, and 24" T+Ks, mount it above the gutter, then you'll get more of the arc and 1W at least.

Incidentally your house must face the same way as mine, got mine on a pole in the garden, and can get up to 30W.

From what I've read ...you are saying that your house is orientated lengthways along the north south axis ...and that you only have an East and West facing outer wall ...
I assume your house isn't detached or semi detached ...and have ajoining properties to the North and South ??
Is this what you are saying ?
If so ..your only real option is to lift the dish above the gutter as has already been suggested ...

yes that how my house is sited although its a end terrace house so i have a north facing wall
im not far off getting true south at all,and i dont want to go above the gutter if i can set it up another way
im thinking that the wall mount i got should bring the dish away from the wall enough to be able to pan round to true south.
the wall mount is 450mm in length,fixed high enough up the wall i might get it

Good luck with that .
I see no reson why it shouldn't work ..
you will get south tracking East ...or South tracking clear to West depending on which wall East or West facing you choose to mount the assembly on .
The dish would be pointing at right angles to the T & K brackets when directed due south ..
The only problemI can see is that you will need to manually set the mechanical limit ajustments on the motor before assembling and mounting the dish ...in order to prevent the dish ever swinging too far wallwards as it were.
