My Satellite Setup
Existing Sky dish. I would like to see if I can get foreign FTA channels as a hobby. What receiver to buy

I'm in the UK and would like to start. I live in an apartment ground floor - so I can move dish- and was considering buying a satellite receiver and using the existing sky dish and cable into my flat.

I've searched for FTA satellite receivers on Google and ebay. Is there any particular one I need to buy?

I saw a some ones on ebay for around £30 that I would buy this weekend if they'd work for foreign FTA.

Yes, they would most likely be fine. You want something that works with DVB-S2 and HEVC. Most things manufactured in the last ten years should.

With your Sky dish you should easily be able to get Astra 19, which is mostly German, and Hotbird 13, which is more varied. Both have a decent selection of interesting content like music and news that you won't find on Sky.
 
Its also important to know which languages & cultures interest you .
The lists on Kingofsat allow you to choose FTA vs encrypted,which sat,and which language you want.
Extremely convenient.
A cheap receiver will be easy to get started,but last a shorter time than a more expensive ,that needs some previous learning to become really useful.
My experience is,the German ones work better and longer, but often have instructions in German. However the machine will "speak" English!
4k has no importance,HEVC is important.

If the dish was previously used with Sky Q then the LNB will need to be changed to a 'universal' type, a photo of the dish and LNB will help. If it is a Sky Q 'wideband' LNB then the direct replacement is usually a mk4 Sky quad LNB.

For a basic receiver a GT Media V9 Prime can be had fairly cheaply. No 4K though and GT Media have recently done a disappearing act but a decent FTA receiver nonetheless.

I'm going to have a look about this afternoon to see if I can find any bargain receivers to get me started.

It would be anything European would be good.

I have saw some cheap receivers and some 2nd hand of the more expensive ones so far.

When I move to a house I plan to get a decent set up or find a good IPTV service for European/World channels but right now I don't have the funds or space to go for that.

I'd like to get started to get used to it.
 
You are welcome if you wanz something cheep and European Go for smaller models of Amiko (Hungary but assembled in China) Edisiion Greek based im Germany assembled in China) vith Korean parts- And Falcon Polish brand assembled in China all in price range of 40 euros about 30 Pounds. If you want only German channels via Asrea There is a French Turkish manufacturer HDline vith model Leyf specisly optimised for German channels on Astras1 But it might be limitrd to German marked usualy offred on Ebay and Amazon.

I didn't explain myself well, I mean a variety of European TV channels.

I'd to see as many European TV channels as I can through my existing sky dish (installed 2016) and buying a satellite receiver.

Later when I move to a place with private back garden I wonder if it would be possible to receive Scandanvian, any further north from the UK - Iceland, Faroe Islands, any further afield possible Greece etc.

But for now I'd be happy to get started and get whatever is possible to get from west Scotland. I would like to buy a receiver soon to get started.
 
So far I've saw V8S, Teknikal, Konig SDCI30, V7X, Gtmedia V9 Prime Digital.
 
In that case i would need to know the size of that dish. You a need a motorized dish for that. One Lnb for all satelites insteead of instaling multiple ones. I personaly use a Moteck 2500 a good metal solid gear Taiwanese producr. But i repeat it depends from your location and antena size. Most Scandinavian channeles are encrypted on Thor 0,8 West and Sirius 4,7 East so ypu need a rceiver capable of opening those chanels.
 
a very basic receiver (Mpeg 4 and HEVC) will get you a lotof channels to begin with. Astra 19 and hotbird 13 on a monoblock (you get both sats on one cable) is the right starting point. Try to list the frequencies you ll WANT,rather than doing a blind research.Make sure you filter "FTA" and TV,unless you want radios too.
at the shop or online,look for an FTA sat tv receiver.And a 13/19 monoblock LNB for your dish.
 
Of all menrioned Gt media sounds like best buy but it is not European it is Chinese. There aree no informaton about Teknikal i have seen loking for somethinh that fits your budget. Probablow budget generic clone from China. Check the list above i gave you.
 
Keep in mind that GT Media stopped manufacturing receivers a few months ago; the official forum for receivers no longer exists—everything has been deleted.
The M**s software is still available, but that's all.

I got an Openbox V8S Satellite receiver box for £20.


Looking forward to it coming. Hope it's the correct one to get some European TV channels.

One of these was my main receiver for many years. No HEVC, multistream or 4K but it has a fairly sensitive tuner and will get most FTA channels that are receivable with your Sky dish. There are a few quirks but nothing to be overly concerned about.
