New router recommendation

Hi guys, I would very much appreciate a ADSL router recommendation for a new router. My current Thomson PlusNet supplied one has went tits up tonight, I looking for a cheap one £30 or less with good U.I. once you log in as some of them are murder to set up the basic port forwarding details I need to access my sat receiver from outside the home. Cheers.
 
Not sure if it will suit but we love our sky router, rock solid (unlike the talk talk router supplied) and you can get them for a fiver on the bay.
 
I use an Amped Wireless SR 1000, it has a gigabit switch and LAN connection and has a 600 mW output, runs my whole yard out to the barn about 450 feet away, (spec says 10,000 square feet) a little pricey but it will cover almost any house with tons of signal.

Do you need 802 "n" or "ac" coverage, as the latter are more expensive?

FWIW, I'm a firm fan of ASUS routers = more expensive but good UI and very configurable + very usable USB ports for both printers and USB storage drives.

Might be fine in "backwoods USA" but I don't it would be "legal" anywhere this side of the Pond ;)

Not bothered mate, I've found TPLink model with two external aerials and 300Mbps speed. £17 instead of £30-35 RRP elsewhere, I'm thinking this is my best bet for a cheap and much better replacement for the duff PlusNet supplied Thomson one I've had all these years. Phoned PlusNet to chance my arm at a discount without the threatening to cancel bluff, guys sent me out a "new" router, should be here Wednesday, I'm not interested, it will be one of those horrible "Technicolor" (Thomson under another name) ones that everybody and their granny supplier wise has issued to their customers, garbage.

Isn't the 2.5 a 5 GHz band an unregulated band over there???(no licensing needed)

Or do you have the government driving around checking power levels on the routers??

Over there we can go to 2 watts if needed, I have several 2 watt USB WIFI adapters in use, works wonders in so called WIFI dead zones.

Over "here" (and the rest of Europe), manufacturers must meet relevant EU Directives (specifically the RTTE now and the RED in future) and that means they must meet specific ("ETSI") standards for the emissions, immunity, spectrum usage and so-on requirements, and there are specific emissions limits for WiFi devices - provided that the manufacturers declare on their "Declaration of Conformity" mentioning the standards applied, stick the "CE" marking on the product (and have all the test data and so on to back that up) then they can self-declare and market the product anywhere in the EU (although I seem to remember that they do need to register with the authorities that they are marketing that type of device).

There are, AFAIK, no relaxations for "difficult" environments, and would you have to apply for a specific (probably very difficult to get!) site licence to use any form of "booster" - don't forget that most of us live in far more crowded environments and our neighbours are often feet/ yards away and not, as in your case, miles, and so interference between properties has to be avoided/minimised (otherwise most of us would probably not be here on this forum as we would not be able to send/receive unless cabled Ethernet were used, and most domestic buildings don't have that - but mine does! :) )!

We don't allow boosters on CB either - although undoubtedly some "miscreants" do use them :(.

They probably should not be listing that sort of product (the seller is in Spain, maybe there the authorities are more lenient, or just don't care/can't afford the cost of identifying sellers of illegal kit) - but, TBH, nobody in the Amazon setup, and probably elsewhere too, is at all familiar with these devices and the regs that apply to them. Unfortunately there's a lot of all sorts of stuff on the EU market (AND the US market - that's why UL continually pursues and prosecutes a lot of companies that counterfeit their Listing Mark!) that should not legally be there for various reasons - some of it gets caught, but a lot does not).​
