Hi.

I was having problems (I thought) with my old Sky+ box so went online and got a new HD version for £187 delivered.

Plugged it in, and all seemed ok except same probs as before. My sat man came out and put a couple of new cables in and all is now better.

Only problem, I can't seem to record anything on any channel other than BBC/ITV basics.

Do I need to pair the viewing card with the new box or something like that? Keen to get wife off my back as she's missed some of her faves.

Also, can't record anything on the old box without the card in. Is that normal?

Thanks chaps.

Correct on all counts.

You need to pair the Card to the new Box.

But that will then restrict Recording features on the old Box.

BSkyB make much dosh out of causing Recording to be a paid-for feature rather than an innate one.

Yes.
Without pairing you can record the free to air channels.
You must call sky and get the box and card paired for the encrypted channels.

Yes
To operate the recording functions in a Sky+ box it must have a sky card that has been activated for Sky+ recordings inserted.
And to record "pay / encrypted" you need a card with subscription and paired to that box.

Well I called customer services (0800 number, not 0844 - can't remember it but I'll post it later) and spoke to a really helpful guy - really, no sarcasm, he was great!

He got my card and box paired and it's now recording fine. Not only that, but he sorted out Anytime for me.

Really refreshing to get someone helpful - and I was only "in the queue" for three minutes.

Yes. You cannot record unless you pay a tax of £10 per month.

Pairing is a pointless exercise for an active FSFS Card as it can be used in any Sky Box.

Pairing a Sub Card is, however, necessary to enable Sports, Films, Recording.
