Yes agreed, but its a much shorter surface area to check accuracy.
I used the coffee table in this instance to demonstrate a point, not to calibrate the app.

Every time I use the app on the phone and the digital protractor I get the same result.

But you haven't showed the reading rotating it on its horizontal axis. I've just tested a so called "Decent" Spirit level and look what happens.
I'll post the video in a moment...

Test on my phone. 0.4 is a lot, that's over 7mm at the end of a meter.

Rotated 180 on H axis.

Well that’s the best I going to do for now, as I have a few other things I have to do.

One down side is to take a screenshot for what you want is on the front of the phone. I have to press 2 buttons at once.

While trying to do 3 things at once

Haha I know the feeling, don't bother checking it, it will drive you mad if it's out.
Did you see the spirit level vid, shocking isnt it.

Finally the hunt for accuracy has ended!
I was going to order a spirit level on Amazon, but it's one of those things I like to check in the shop.
Went out to buy a Stabila, came back with a Stanley...

This one is perfect for getting things plumb, has strong rare earth magnets, a V grove for pipe, 0.5mm/m guaranteed accuracy with a 10 year guarantee, also built very well as it's cast aluminium.

It is cheaper than the Stabila range and in every shop I went to this model was always bang on for accuracy.
Nice clear bit vials and even has an adjustable vial, which is handy for working out degrees and if set to 90 you have 2 vials to check plumb.

And only £16! (Cheaper on Amazon if you feel like a gamble)

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
@RustySpoons, and others!
OK, now that the "new toy" is going back, and you've said you are "going back" to something else ( the Stanley Tat Max "analogue"), I would still to consider getting something "digital" (& less than about £30) for the work in the next couple of months to remount the TD88 on a new post and also realign a couple of multi-feed dishes - so does anyone else have a substantial preference for "anything else"?

The analogue will be more accurate!, I'd go Wixey WR-365 if I was doing it again with digital, that's actually designed to be used as a level.
Though I do fancy trying one of these:
eBay: 5060165938285

Can a mod please edit post #1 and put at the top TL;DR Don't bother buying one. (Done)

Revisiting this thread...

I went to my local Axminster to have a play with the ones in there. I opened a few boxes up and tested different brands. They are all out by 0.1 - 0.3 degrees. None are any good for absolute measurements only relative.

Your experience with these digital levels is my exact experience with a bloody digital compass, what is the point of something where you need to lay the thing on a perfectly flat surface and rotate it whilst you switch it on so it calibrates itself, £30 for this cr@p, £3 plastic compass I got back in the day works instantly, job done.

I've got a £3 compass from eBay lol, these "Digital" things do not work, there is not enough accuracy in the sensor.
The expensive ones might though.
