Probably not new, but soon to be introduced (July), a new allowance for private communication, a shade from the old 27MHz CB band.

The new Ofcom rules are going to allow AM transmissions on both of the side bands of the usual 26.965-27.405 MHz (11m) range, so anybody with one of those old school CB radios with side bands should be able to get on station without spending any money.

No silly power though:(

I've got one of these in the loft ready for the changes.
:D

Thats no good legally speaking as the equipment needs to be type approved and unmodified. (If that wasn't the case I'd invest in a cobra 148gtldx or a tristar 747/777 lol)
It's still only the eu wide CEPT channels that allow AM/SSB, its still illegal on the UK 40

Yep but who's going to know, you couldnt tell if someone was using a ham concorde 2 on 27/81 band unless they told you- or you sat outside theyre house trying to pick up the third harmonic. Now a hygain V, thats a different matter with the scratchy audio or the infamous multimode2. Looks like i'll be quids in , i have over 20 am/ssb rigs in the loft. Ive been biding my time waiting for the market to pick up. I bought them cheap maybe 10 years ago, theyre all tuned up,most are widebanded too, as i do like to play with the phase lock loops adding channels.

Personally I'm not that fussed that the radios from back in the day are not "approved" but I would have loved to be able to setup an old school rig and use it legally on the CEPT channels on SSB or even AM

I'd hazard a guess and say that at least 80%+ of rigs used on the new SSB/AM CEPT allocation will be old classics not type approved

Indeed Smoggy, the trouble will be when some nerd starts pumping out 12W ssb right next door to somebodies stereo or tv with a poor signal from their tv transmitter.

Good, the Tristar 727 only has a 10W switch on the front panel.

Is that 727 a 120 channel rig or 69 channel rig?

I must apologise, the picture I posted is a stock photo thingy, and looks nothing like the facia on the box I have here, though you can just about see the 'pull for FM' section to the far right.
