Newbie Can I receive Hd thru a MaxviewMXL 020

My Satellite Setup
maxview mxl 020
My Location
lancashire
Currently using this system onboard a narrowboat. I am able to receive the following satellite transmissions
ASTRA 19E, 28E,
HOTBIRD 13E, TURKSAT 42E,HELLAS SAT39E
On the same dish setting

Two questions
Is it possible to pick up HD transmissions and if so how ( in simple terms )

You will need to swap the satellite receiver over for one that is compatible with HD transmissions. Presumably you would need it to run off 12V as well, or use an inverter.

If the box is a HD-ready box, then yes, otherwise, no, a non-HD receiver will not decode HD signals... :)

Out of curiosity, where abouts are you or your boat located? I live near to Barrowford Locks and cycle a lot round here, I just wish I could live on a narrowboat myself... :)

No you are probably mistaken, on a fixed dish you can not be receiving multiple satellites unless you have multi lnbs or monobloc lnbs.
You are experiencing a phenomenon where your stb is preprogrammed with channel information on different satellite and the details frequency polarity SR FEC etc are repeated across the satellite arc giving the impression you are viewing different satellites.

Looks like l'm experiencing a phenomenon Robbo. ;)
It looks like I'll have to invest in a new receiver if I want HD then, what sort of entry level price can I expect to pay ?
If I go for Freesat would I still be able to access all the other stations I currently can receive.
Given the number of HD transmissions available is it better to wait and see if receiver prices fall:confused:

Only if your profile information is not up to date and you do not have a motorised dish :cool::cool:

You credit me with too much intelligence and certainly too much money.
I have neither, I am simply trying to find the least expensive route to enjoy a good qualitity picture on a Narrow boat when I am moored up.

Jon, can you expain a bit more about your setup.

eg

Do you have a 'fixed dish'? ( inverted commas since it's on a mobile platform)

or do you have a motorised dish, or some other way of pointing the dish at various satellites? ( eg swivelling round a bit as required).


To be sure, are you really getting signals from different satellites? or are you suffering from the phenomenon?

Either way, an explaination is needed of exactlly what setup youv'e got and how you are using it.

At a guess I'd say he has a minidish or a portable (Porty/Lidl/Maplin/Aldi) type dish, as they seem to be better suited to the movement of the boat (wider focus margin unlike larger dishes), a lot of narrowboats and other craft I've seen on the L&L have small dishes, anything bigger's too bulky (though I'd love to see a motorised 1.2m Channel Master strapped onto one, but I think that's highly unlikely!!! :-rofl2 )... :)

I am using a Kerstan "Fixed"minidish.
I made the assumption that having found Astra 2 and done a scan I then scanned in the other satellites , they appeared to download and when chosen I appear to be receiving transmission from each of the different satellites according to the info/epg buttons.:confused::confused:

Yes, you are suffering from the phenomenon metioned previously.

Check out lyngsat.com. You will see a list of all the satellites and the frequencies that they transmit on. Some frequencies are used again and again all round the arc.

Which translates to:- If you set the receiver up for 19.2E, but point the dish at 28.E for example you will still only receive the channels from 28E, but a beginner can be fooled into thinking that they are getting a signal from 19.2E.
